3 red lights -nothing else happening

Hi, first of all check if you have any warranty as this fault is covered by 3 years warranty from microsoft, so check the date on the back of the xbox, if its less than 3 years old go to their website and enter your details and they will send you out another xbox in place of yours.

if its more than 3 years old or if its been opened before then you have 2 options either pay someone to fix it or fix it yourself.

what 3 red lights are telling you is that you have the dreaded red ring of death, you get this due to the gpu and or the cpu chip over heating, now the most likely causes of this are as follows.
1 the aire ven has been blocked at one end of the xbox stopping cool air being sucked into the xbox, this air vent is the bottom part when you stand it up.
2 after prolonged use the xbox sucks in dust and this blocks the heat sinks and stops the cool air being sucked throught the heat sink and then the gpu chip over heats
3, over time the circuit board can warp causing loss of connection between teh gpu and or cpu chip.

now what has happened is one of the above has caused either the gpu chip and or cpu chip to over heat and this has then caused either bad connection between the gpu and or cpu and the heat sink, so getting the heat sink paste replaced may solve the problem, how ever most cases of rrod is due to the fact the 2 chips have over heated and the cheap lead free solder microsoft uses to bond their chips to the circuit board has failed causing a loss in connection between these chips and the circuit board.

check if you have warranty as this fault is covered
if you have no warranty then you need to either pay someone to reflow the solder or risk having a go yourself and making matters a lot worse, its not easy to do if its the 1st one you have ever done as getting it wrong is very easy, now if as soon as you switch it on you get the 3 red lights this means the chips need reflowing but if you switch it on and the fans run slow but then speed up to top speed then this indicates the the heat sink paste needs teaking off the gpu and cpu chips and also off the heat sinks and new paste putting on.

if you plan on doing this repair yourself use google and search for free rrod repair guide how ever dont ever try the towel trick it will only get it working for few hours then it will be beyond repair, or dont put it in the oven this will destroy most of board, the only way i have found you can do it yourself is by using a heat gun with 2 settings on it and you use the lowest settings, you will be shown this in the guide.

also search for this how to fix rrod using heat gun then hit search follow these instructions carefully getting it wrong will destroy your xbox, just taking it apart is a nightmare on its own so you have been warned, i can send you a repair guide if needed just send me your email address ok

now if your going to fix it yourself use google and type in how to fix rrod on xbox 360 then hit search and have a look at some of the sites, now the chances are the gpu chip will need reflowing now this can be done with a heat gun on its lowest setting, but getting this wrong can do more harm than good.

the best thing to try first is the xclamp fix, go and buy a xbox 360 repair kit off ebay make sure you get the heat sink paste with it, you can get these kits for next to nothing and if you find one with a repair guide then that will make it easier for you, without these parts you wont be able to fix the xbox anyway.

dont do the towel trick it dont work and it causes more harm to the circuit board so dont try that one.

just use google type in how to fix rrod on xbox 360 and look for a guide that shows you how to replace the x clamps with normal machine screws and renew the heat sink paste, its not hard to do and you will get a guide off google with pictures so im sure you can give it a go.

if how ever replacing the clamps dont solve the problem then use google again and type in how to fix rrod with heat gun on xbox 360 then hit search then look through the sites and look for a decent guide that shows you how to do this, dont use a hair dryer like some sites may suggest they just dont get hot enough to reflow the damaged solder under the gpu and cpu chip.

if you do use a heat gun make sure the circuit board is lying flat if its not you will do alot more harm than good so make sure its level.

i cant point you to these sites as its against site police but use google and you will find all you need and you should be able to get it sorted. if its less than 3 years old and you open it up then your warranty will be void and microsoft wont even look at it,

now i repair these for 20 quid plus parts so it comes to about 25 quid, but im in UK and the chances are your somewhere else in the world.

if you are unsure what your doing then please dont try repairing this yourself as you could do a lot more harm than good.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

please rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks..,..

3 of 4 rings were red, now no lights at all

ok the three red rings was lit to notify you that your board, cpu and gpu have experienced a significant source of heat. So much in fact you really should bring it to a repair shop. I see these at least 4-5 times a day your 360 needs to be disassembled and the heat sinks removed this will allow you access to the cpu and gpu both sides of the board need to be heated with a equal amount of heat to heat up the solder and reseat both chips.

I need to know how to fix the e74 error on xbox 360 without microsoft or buying one of those guides if you have one just tell how to fix it!

Well you can do a conservative x clamp mod
on it .This will more than likely get your system
running again , but there's a catch . It may not
last long 2-3 months is average but some unit run
longer. It's quite simple actually. Strip the unit
down to the P.C. board . Remove both X clamps
and both heat sinks clean the chips and the
heat sink Put a thin coat of articsilver5 on
the chips . remove all the studs from both
heat sinks place the heat sinks back on and
line up the holes and get 8 10-32 x 3/8 pan head
Philips screws thread all the screws in evenly and
then tight (not to tight) put the unit back together
but leave the fan hanging out . place half the
fan over the large heatsink . Ready to cycle-
plug in the power and the audio/ video and power on
after 5 min the fan should be at full speed and 4-5 min more you should get 2 red lights -unplug after 10min weather you get 2 red or not . wait 15min
and reassemble your unit should be working . that's

Hope that helps . if you get 3 red and no fan before
you try to over heat , don't worry just back off
the screws in the G.P.U.'s heat sink.

This is not recommended for console that are under warranty

Hey i have 2 red lights on my xbox 360 on the left side can u help

The unit is over heating , if the fan quickly goes
to full speed you have an air gap in the C.P.U. heat sink
The fix is to re-seat the heat sink to the chip . This is done
by applying even pressure on the heat-sink and turning it on
to see if you have good contact. and repeat till the fan speed
drops .

If you have any questions just comment and ill respond.

Xbox 360 Error Code 0021

So, you took apart the Xbox 360?

The Xbox 360 has serious cooling problems; compressed air usually does wonders for the Xbox.

You'll "brick" your Xbox tampering with the fan and heat sink; soft mods are always a bad idea if you don't have any recourse for fixing the system.

Hard Mods/Mod Chips are the best way to go because you have dual boot capabilities; you can boot to the original Xbox OS or the Mod Chip firmware.

Currently, Microsoft is being sued for the number of Xbox 360 consoles experiencing the "Red Rings of Death."

Microsoft is making amends by fixing the Xbox 360 at no charge.

Taking the Xbox apart yourself may void your warranty; you might start by uses an Ohm Meter to check the heat sink and fan connections.

Also make sure there is not a gap between the heat sink and the processor; this space should be filled with the thermal compound.

Furthermore, the fan might be damaged and not reporting the fan speed through the variable resistance wire; only way to determine this is by powering the fan with +5v / -5v and checking the variable resistance wire with an Ohm meter.

My xbox 360 beeps then freezes to random screens

This happens a lot which is then i followed by the 3 red rings(red rings of death). is what you need to do is open your'e console, their are help video's on U tube for this. Once your is console open and you have the mother board taken out you need to remove the heat sinks which are on top of the chips. just un-snap the x clamps (on the bottom of the motherboard) and take off the heat sinks. unscrew the tabs on the bottom of the heats sinks and take them out. now take one of the heat sinks to a hardware store and find 8 screws about an inch long that screw into the heat sinks, also buy 16 plastic washers and 8 metal washers that fit onto the screws.also trey to find a BUTANE Torch this will save you from the expensive heatguns and work just as good. the last thing you need is Artic Silver 5 which can be found for 5 bucks on ebay. now once you have this you need to lay your motherboard on a flat imflammable area. light the torch and make shure it is on the LOWEST setting and that the flame is about 3/4 inch long and make a sort on hissing sound. make shure the top ofthe chips are cleaned with a paper towl of the paste. start with the torch about 3 inches over a chip and keep it moving with a sweeping motion after about 30 seconds start to get close but not to close about an inch an a half away and keep making sweeping and circular movements for about 2 min. do not get to close. now move to the next chip and do the same thing. now after ur done with the chips move the torch away about 3inches and keep heat on both chips for another minute and let them cool for a total of 10 to 15 minutes. once they are cool to the touch clean off the metal parts of the chips with alcohol (I preffer acitone too) make shure they have a mirror like finish and put a very little glob of the artic silver on the metal chips and evenly flaten it out till it covers them evenly, make shure to apply enough! ( i used the side of a allen wrench, its less messy). now on the bottom of both heat sinks, clean them off with acitone or alcohol and scrub them very firmly to get off the grime from the paste. now put one plastic washer on each screw and insert them through the bottom of the holes surrounding the chips flip the mother board over and put the other 8 plastic washers on the screws and on top of these put on the 8 metal washers. then put the heat sinks on and tighten them down. once you put the mother board in the metal casing, plug it in(dont fully essmble it yet) now test out your xbox by pressing the little button on the ring of lights board and let it boot up a usual. If it works then ur done, but if 3 red lights start blinking or two red light start blinking you need to ajust the 8 screws. through the 8 holes in the bottom of the metal casing stick a small srewdriver in there and make shure they are all snug but not to tight and then loosin each one about an 1/8 of a turn till there just a little loose. keep testing and adjusting the screws till it boots up with the green lights.

16 platic washers
8 metal washers(make shure all the washers fit snuggly around the screws and are very thin)
8 screws about an inch long that fit heat sinks
Butane blow torch, just a small one will do
small torx wrench kit. big and small flat and phillips head screwdrivers

Red lights on xbox

3 Red lighs means a hardware failure. If you've opened up the console you have void the warranty so you can't get it replaced. It would have been a quick fix in a certified repair shop with one ring and your warranty would still be valid. Unfortunately, you will have to attempt to fix the console yourself or get a new one. I recommend you get it replaced though.

Xbox 360

I just fixed my Xbox360 3 RROD error by removing the heat sinks and reflowing the solder on both the CPU and GPU by using a heat gun and aluminum foil.

1. Remove the XClips and heatsinks.
2. Get some foil and press it around the GPU and CPU chips. This is to protect other SMT devices from getting blown away when the solder melts. I covered about half the PCB surrounding the chips.
3. Cut out a square hole for the chip you are working on, I used my fingernail. Give about an 1/16 inch gap all around the chip for heat to get under the chip but not on the caps etc on the PC board.
4. Run the heat gun all around the edges of the chip, trying not to overheat the silicon chip itself or the caps and resistors on the chip.
5. While heating the chip, I used a thin piece of solder near the chip to guage when it was hot enough to flow the solder (dont let this piece get onto anything when it melts) move all around the edges, aiming at a 45 degree angle into the chip.
6. Clean off the old heat sink compound off of the chips and heatsink and replace.
7. Reassemble the heatsinks, put the XClips back on (no I did not modify anything).
8, To do a quick test, plug in the power switch PCB, the fans, video and power. See if it works, shut it off as soon as you get the spinning green lights (it will overheat quickly without proper cooling giving the two vertical red light error).

My xbox flashed a red light, and the screen goes black

I went with the eraser fix and it worked like a charm. Can anybody explain why using erasers changes things and makes the 360 work without the 3 red lights flashing? Just Curious!
