Common problems...blown house fuse/tripped breaker ( electric dryers need 2 )...loose white/neutral wire...broken belt ( on some models only )...door switch/door switch bracket...*thermal fuse open ( venting needs attention )...broken or burnt wire...timer...motor...burnt power cord/plug...start switch ( especially the ones with a built in relay switch )
* If you find a blown thermal fuse, always clean, change, adjust the venting system and vent hood first, then it is sometimes a good idea to replace the operating thermostat at the same time.

thanks.

Sounds like your problem may be a broken belt.
If you have to replace your drum belt and if you have a front loading machine.
First you will need to unplug your dryer from the electric.
Remove the front of the machine, this will expose the belt and drum, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm bracket with pulley, and motor with pulley.
While you have the drum out, I would also recommend that you lubricate the drum rollers at the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil like 3 in One oil. This will save you problem later with the rollers getting noisy, also check your drum rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them this will cause a noise like a thumping type noise. You will need to replace the drum rollers if they have flat spots on them.
If the belt is not the problem then you have exposed the motor for further checks. If the motor is ok, then I would look at the start switch or the timer switch.
Good luck,
I hope this helps

My whirlpool dryer will not start

OK, check the following areas to combat this no start issue.

1. No power to the dryer
Make sure there's power getting to the dryer. Check for a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Check the wall socket for power with a voltmeter or by plugging something else in. Sometimes the power cord disconnects or burns at the dryer, if this is the case, the wiring and the terminal block must be repaired or replaced.

2. Door switch / Door switch actuator lever
The dryer would not start with a broken door switch. Replace the door switch if found defective.

Most dryers have a door switch actuator lever - when you close a dryer door, it presses against the lever, which actuates the door switch. If the lever is broken, the switch would not activate and the dryer would not start. Replace the lever, if broken.

Note: Door switch actuator lever usually comes with the door switch assembly and it is recommended to get the whole assembly since there is almost no price difference between the door switch assembly and just the lever. Check your model for more details.

Most dryers have a thermal fuse, which burns out when the dryer overheats, in which case the dryer will either not run at all or stop heating. The fuse is usually located on the vent duct, inside the dryer. A blown fuse will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Before replacing the fuse, make sure the blower wheel is not broken or clogged, and there is nothing blocking the venting.

Note: It is recommended by most dryer manufacturers to replace a hi-limit thermostat when replacing a thermal fuse.

If all the above checks out ok, replace the timer or control board.

make sure the green wire is connected like in the picture. this connects directly to the neutral, if it is disconnected when you connect a 3 wire cord then this problem you are having will happen.

Kenmore electric dryer won't start

The first thing I would check would be the door switch. Dryers operate on 220 volts. Many brands split the 220v into 110v for controls and motor and 110v to the heater. There are also safety systems on many brands that won't allow the heater to come on if the fan motor is not running and blowing air throught he element to prevent overheating and dryer fires. If the door switch is ok, check the belt. If the belt is ok, it could be a problem with the motor start switch. The motor start swith is complicated fix and should be done by a professional. ALWAYS BE SURE TO DICONNECT THE POWER BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY REPAIRS.

I had the same problem. Replaced the capacitor and now all is ok. Dryer is working 100%. If you hear a humming sound from the motor then it means the capcitor is faulty and does not start the motor properly.
