Have you tried using your USB in standard speed connection?
What OS are you using?

I have a couple of ideas...

    Ok, first a few questions:
    1) Have you tried using standard (vs enhanced) USB connection?

This is done the following way:
Right click on My Computer (or My PC), then on Properties, go to the Hardware tab finally click on Device Manager.

There you will find everything that's connected to your PC, if your device is currently plugged in and not fully recognized, try looking for it under "Other devices".

If that is not there, click the + sign on the bottom at "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Then you should find something similar to "[brand name] USB Enhanced Host Controller"; right click here then click on disable. Warning: your mouse and keyboard will be disconnected for about a minute while the USB ports are reset.

After this happens, you are now working on Standard USB (v1.1), reboot and reinstall and replug your drive see if it works.

If not, then the USB interface could be broken. Your drive and info should be safe though.

Ok, at least you are showing something other than "unknown device"... right click on it and then on "Update Driver..."; then pop in your CD with the drivers for your Maxtor, and click on 'continue anyway' if it asks...

Please tell me how it goes.

Our MAXTOR Onetouch 4 mini is not recognized by computer. Can your software recover the data?

could be several issues to cause this fault, make sure your usb port is usb 2.0, replace the usb cable, take the unit apart and look for loose conections, try the drive in another caddy, or try another drive in the maxtor caddy. You will probably be able to remove the drive from the caddy and connect it into your computer if you have a tower and the correct connections.

Have you tried right clicking on the drive and going into properties. Click on security option and make sure that all the permissions for the drive are active with the exception of special permissions. Also look at the advanced security settings and make sure that you have full control permissions. Hope this helps.

This doesn't require downloading anything, installing anything, or holding your mouth in a certain way.

1) Plug the drive into power and into your Vista PC's USB port.
2) When the 'Found New Hardware' wizard pops up, click the recommended option. When it says it can't find the drivers, select 'Show me other options', and then Browse your computer for drivers. Choose the C:\ drive, and click next.**

**The key here is that Windows Vista comes pre-installed with the drivers for the Maxtor external hard drives. So they're on your PC, even if the Wizard tells you they're not.

4) Wait a few minutes, and yo will see a window that reads, "The software for this device has been successfully installed," and now it will appear as a drive letter under 'Computer'.

thanks RP

Maxtor is now owned by Seagate, and yes, you can go to http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/installation_assistance/installation_instructions/external_drives_&_personal_servers/ot2
Hope that helps, i am trying to get my Maxtor External II working now too, I think it's a power supply, cause it wants to keep installing the driver, but the driver is already there. Hmmm anybody?

Old Maxtor/New Maxtor

If files you are trying to restore are encrypted you will have to use same software to retrieve them.. If not, any file in the external hard drive should be viewable with your windows explorer.

And U do not need drivers for external hard drives. They just plug into your usb port and work with modern OS after the unit is recognized.

DROPPED MY HARD DRIVE

well more that likely you disloged something in the case bu dropping it. What you need to do is open it up and see what has gone slack or disloged.. Its shoulden't require any replacement parts really as i dont think anything whould have been broken.

what you need to do it

open it in a clean enviornment which has little to no dust
and be careful not to break anything or soil anything while its opened

The drive will need to be extracted. The enclosure and/or drive has failed and is causing your computer to fail. Remove the drive carefully from the enclosure and test it in a good, known working stable enclosure...
