Without a Sams Photofact or a service manual I would go directly to the Power IC which is the largest Integrated Circuit mounted to a large heat sink. If you see any fuses they are probably for the power supply since any fused circuit on the speaker output would be ineffective because the IC would be damaged before the fuse would blow, but you need to check them anyway. Since the short was at the speaker output your problem should be at the final stage of amplification, which is the Power Amp IC. Prior to the early 70's you would have transistors mounted to a heat sink which could be individually checked and replaced. Then manufactures started to use the Power Amp IC which are more costly but eliminate having to find matched pair transistors. All you can check on the Power Amp IC is if you have an input using an oscilloscope or signal tracer and the power to the IC. If you have an input signal and power to the device with no output, I would replace the IC. Unless you have a test circuit for the IC you cannot test it completely unless you have a device like a Huntron Tracker or build a test circuit using a signal generator and a power supply to measure the gain of the IC with an oscilloscope. Short of ordering a service manual this is a good place to start.
A nice little Control IC but when they fail ithey take out a lot of components around the power supply especially the output FET rather catastrophically for the power board. I would look elsewhere for your fault because if there is a flashing light, the microprocessor has power and that comes from the power supply. Look for open circuit fuseable links. Hope that helps.
I have not repaired this particular model. If this TV is a projection set,you have one of two possible problems. First....You may have convergence IC that has lost a ground contact to the signal board. We are discussing the board that has all your RCA connections and RF connectors. You may have to replace, possibly a STK-XXX series convergence IC. One or two capacitors near this IC, usually a bad cap will end the life of an IC and resistors. And replace a couple of resistors, these are standing tall next to the convergence IC. The next problem could be on the power supply. The power supply will almost always have the flyback transformer on it. If you can locate the vertical IC..This IC may need resoldering. You will see rings around the pins of the vertical IC. Replace the three or four capacitors next to the IC. A bad capacitor will overheat an IC and cause solder grounds to separate. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!
Possible failure of the output IC in the Tv's audio section.
First of all open and check for possible failure of the main power supply to the output IC, Check if the series fuse/fusible resistor has opened, if after replacing the same issues come up then it is confirmed that the IC is defective.
If power comes to IC then check on the bias resistors around the IC or the feedback loop,-- capacitors in this section.
You don't sound like you are very skilled in micro-miniature repair so for you it is cheaper in the long run to just replace the power supply. You can order it from HP.com. Some computer stores have old power supplies for sale. You may get lucky.
Good Day SIr, sound to me like your switching power supply is not working properly, there is an IC that controls the switching action of your power supply, this MAY be the reason why it stays off. locate the IC at the power supply section, replace it then test. There is also a possibility of open low value resistors near the switching transistor (very hard to locate). hope this helps.
The probable defective part is the vertical IC. If changing that does not resolve the problem, check the capacitors in the same circuit. Also, check for the proper voltages at the vertical IC. If the IC is not being fed its power, it won't work either. I don't have a listing for your specific model. If you can post the vertical IC part number (LA7837 for example), I can list the voltages per pin.
The GE (actually RCA) 46GW945 uses the PTK195 chassis. There is a separate power supply for the convergence circuits in those sets. The earlier versions used a switching transistor but most sets use the STK730-010 power IC. I have seen many of those IC's stop working after a power surge, resulting in very curved sides with screwy colors. You can remove the back and you will see the 2 main boards at the bottom of the set. The convergence power supply board is mounted above the board on the right (when viewed from the back) and has a pretty large black IC mounted on a little heat sink, labeled STK730-010. Replace that IC and the colors should return to normal. If you do not have experience replacing IC's and working on TV's then allow a qualified tech to handle it for you.
