I have had two of my Canon plotters give this error.message, I had to manually move the carriage unit and replace the printhead. On one of the plotters the error message returned, on the second plotter I was able to go into service mode where it asked me to replace the printhead. I just went though the motions since the printhead was brand new and I was able to get the plotter to function correctly.

Over heat of the print head.
Turn off - Turn on the machine, if this will not work try to access the service mode update to the latest firmware version and replace the print head

I think you need to manually move the carriage unit and replace the print head but go into the service mode first and see whether its asking to have the print head replaced before you spend any money.
