Note: How to reset video output settings
If you are attempting to change to an HDMI cable from a different video cable or if the video output settings do not match those required for the display in use, the screen may stay black. If the screen stays black for more than 30 seconds, you may need to reset the video output settings of the PS3.
To reset video output settings:
Turn the PS3 system off by holding the Power button on the front of the console till you see the power light turn red.
Then hold the power button on the front of the console for at least five seconds until you hear a second beep to turn the system on again. The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.
TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port
You need to know the TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port on your TV. For instance, if your TV has multiple "Input" or "Video" channels, (i.e., "Input 1", "Input 2", "Input 3", etc.), you will need to toggle through each "Input" channel on your TV until you find the correct channel that displays the HDMI picture. This is important to remember, especially if you do not see the HDMI picture after you connect the cable and configure the PS3 settings. Please refer to the TV instruction manual for more information.
Turn OFF the PS3TM system using the [MAIN POWER] switch (in the back)
Unplug the AC power cord from the electrical outlet
Turn OFF and unplug the TV
Connect one end of the HDMI cable into the [HDMI OUT] port on the back of the PS3 system. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable into the [HDMI Input] port of the TV or display monitor.

Plug in the AC power cord by connecting one end of the AC power cord into the [AC IN] port on the back of the PS3 system and the other end into an electrical outlet.
alt="line drawing of AC power cord">
Press the [MAIN POWER] switch on the rear of the system. A red light should appear on the front of the system indicating power is available.
Turn on the PS3 by pressing the touch-sensitive [On/Off button] on the system front. The red light will turn green, indicating the PS3 is now turned on.
Note: The blue light will also appear on the front of the system if you have a disc inserted.
Plug in the TV and turn the power on. The PS3 should detect the HDMI display device automatically. When prompted, "Do you want to output video and audio using HDMI?", select YES and press the alt="X button icon">button. (You may need to press the PS button on the center of the SIXAXISTMcontroller to enable the controller first).
The next screen will ask, "Do you want to automatically switch to the optimal setting?" Select YES and press the alt="X button icon">button.
On the next screen, the PS3 will display the maximum resolution capable on the display (i.e., 1080p). The screen will display, "Do you accept the setting?" You will have 30 seconds to confirm your answer.2 Select YES and press the alt="X button icon">button to save your settings. You have now completed the HDMI installation.
First, make sure your TV is on the appropriate input for the plugged in HDMI cable. Once this is completed, turn your ps3 on. If the screen comes on and is black, turn the ps3 to standby (red light is on) and hold the front power button until the console beeps a second time. This will usually force the ps3 to recognize the hdmi input and will bring up the menu to configure the AV settings.
HDMI is available in several versions. The PS3 is compatible with HDMI version 1.3 or higher, which will take full advantage of Blu-ray Disc™ high-definition video. There are also "Type A" and "Type B" connectors. The PS3 uses the 19-pin Type A connector, which will allow resolutions up to 1080p. The HDMI cable is not included with the PS3.
Cable adaptors (i.e., HDMI to DVI converters)
If you are using an adaptor (i.e., HDMI to DVI converter), try bypassing this adaptor and connecting the HDMI cable directly into the display.
Check the adaptorTry an alternate cable
Try connecting with the supplied AV Cable instead of the HDMI to see if you can get a successful installation. This will help determine where the problem may be with your particular HDMI setup and/or equipment.
Some older HDTVs may have issues with the copy protection protocols (HDCP) causing the handshake not being communicated between the TV and the PS3. Try resetting the TV by turning the TV and PS3 off, then unplug the TV power cord from the outlet and plug it back in. Then turn your TV and PS3 back on and see if the picture appears.
Try using a different the HDMI Cable on the PS3.Make sure the HDMI Cable is free of any cuts, frays or other visible damage.
Try installing the PS3 to another TV or display (i.e., monitor).
Try using the HDMI Cable with a different PS3 system.
What is probably happening, is your PS3 is set for the wrong type of output. If you are using an HDMI cord, try switching to the AV cables that came with your PS3, and set your TV at the appropriate input to correspond with the AV hookups, and see if the picture works then.
If you are using the AV cables, it may have been set to HDMI accidentally. You need to use an HDMI cord, and hook the PS3 up to an HDMI compatible TV or monitor, and select the HDMI input. Once you get the picture working, go to Settings>Display Settings and set the display you wish to use.
1 - Turn on TV and set input to port being used.
2 - Make sure PS3 is connected via correct cable.
3 - Power on PS3 via power button and HOLD IT for 5 seconds (release
after the second beep). It should automatically configure your PS3 to
the TV's native resolution for all settings.
Then after that change the output setting to HDMI on your PS3 and see if it works after that, if not, try the system on another TV to make sure its not a problem with your tv.
If it still doesn't work try another cable and then after that it could be a problem with the main board inside of the ps3.
Sorry, I initially posted this under the wrong help topic. You should try holding the on/off button for a few seconds until you hear 3 beeps. This should force the ps3 to recognize whatever video connection you have. If you switch back from hdmi to another type (component or composite) this will be have to be done again.
I can't be exactly sure without more information, but it sounds like you ps3 is outputting from another port. My ps3 originally was outputting from the component/composite cable port so in order to use the hdmi output I had to do a soft reset. That makes the ps3 sense what cable is plugged into it and automatically output through that port instead of using whatever is the saved setting.
With your ps3 turned on hold down the power button for a few second until it beeps and flashes 3 times (should be about 5 seconds). You might have to try it a few times to get it to work, but you should get picture and be able to adjust the settings on the ps3.
