There seems to be an incompatability. Some of those devices can only read up to a certain file size, like my friend has a digital photoframe that can only recognise up to 2GB. Also try not putting the files in folders and just having them all in the root directory

Windows xp will not recognise the seagate freeagent desktop drive

Assuming you have tried other usb ports and had no change, remove the usb connection, then go back into device manager and select the usb controller, right click and select delete as this will erase any input driver the usb port recognises. Restart the pc and then the controller should be reinstalled automatically as it sounds as though the controller has become corrupt for some reason. Go back into device manager and check there are no exclamation marks, reconnect the drive and see if it's recognised.

Connect some other USB device (keyboard? mouse? memory-stick?) to your desktop?
Are those devices detected? If not, then either:
* the USB port(s) on your desktop are damaged,
* the device-drivers for the USB ports on your desktop are not installed.

Try connecting it to a different desktop/laptop, to see if the Seagate works at all, on any desktop.

Need Manual or Instructions for Seagate Portable Hard Drive

Your External Drive should be plug and play enable since it is a USB Drive.

Connect the appropriate cables to the External Drive and from the External Drive to the Computer while the computer is fully booted.

The driver for the Drive is loaded else you will be promted that the system have found a new device, if that is the case, put the CD-ROM that came drive and follow the instruction to complete the driver installation.

Open my computer icon on your desktop and you see the external drive.

My light is on and a buzz sound is heardwhich stops after a minute and no data is displayed

You do not say whether the HDD ever worked.

If it did, and stopped, chances are that the internal HD is damaged, or the motor performances degraded and it now requiring a higher current than the USB port can deliver.

Try plugging it on a different USB port or, better yet, into an externally powered USB hub. There are also special cables which plug two USB ports into one and deliver double current to the appliance.

As a last resort, it might be possible to recover it by extracting it from its enclosure and connecting to a desktop PC via a 3.5-to-2.5 inch HD adapter.

In all cases, unless it never worked on that PC (which means that the problem might be in that PC's USB port), I'd strongly suggest to back up all data on another disk.

have you try connect your pen drive to the same usb port, is it working?
If Pendrive is working but not the Seagate hardisk. Most propably is your USB power is not enough to support the External Seagate hard disk, you need to supply more power to the Seagate hard disk by using USB Y cable(1 end connect to Seagate hardisk where the other end got 2 USB connector to connect to your PC).

External Harddrive Ignorance...

I've seen this happen with hubs being connected to external hard drives before.

Do you have a free usb port on the back of your computer you can plug it into?

That should fix the problem.

Windows 98 driver for FreeAgent

If your PC is still running Win98 then it probably has a USB version 1.0 port. I don't think the Faster USB version 2.0 devices will work properly even if you have the correct driver - i.e. you have a hardware version conflict. Try Purchasing a USB version 2.0 Daughter board for the PC and plugging the Seagate drive into that iinstead.
