Question about Sony KP-57WS510 57" Rear Projection HDTV

5 Answers

Starts up then 6 red blinks

KP-57WS510 on power up - Screen brightens up white with rainbow hues and a few colored arcs then shuts off with a series of 6 blinks on the red light.

Examined all boards found no burns or hot spots other than a possible burn spot in the plastic cover over VB6001 on the G board

Ordered G and D board from Sears for replacement but only G board came. They said they cannot get the D board. Now I see some people say it could be the A board. Should I just send back the G board and scrap the tv or is it worth pursuing. Seams like no one has the G board anymore. I don't want to install the D board and cook something on it.
I also would like to know how to safely discharge the capacitors without hurting the rest of the components on the boards. I have a digital multimeter and can solder components. I would rather just replace boards if possible.

I tried the adjustments listed @ before posting this problem but had no results.
I tried red first by moving it in 1/16 increments until I was 180 degrees from original settings in both directions and would restart the tv each time I moved it. I then went on to the other colors but had no results.

I also could not make the address for the post to the camera site work. But I did find a post on Fix Ya that addressed the problem.

  • hilclimer Dec 24, 2007

I wasn't very clear about which problem was addressed in my reply. I meant how to discharge
    capacitors problem.

  • hilclimer Dec 25, 2007

Only cleared up "How to discharge capacitor question."

When the set died I did call the only Tech in Sioux City that would look at it. He turned it on- watched it blink- turned to me and said "The tube is shot. Its not worth fixing. The service call is $95.00 payable now." As he was walking out the door I said I didn't think projection TV's had a tube just guns. He just shrugged his shoulders turned and walked out the door. The set has only about 30hrs of use and still looks brand new. If I have to take it somewhere else my choices are Lincoln NE (132 miles) or Sioux Falls SD (136 miles). It appears I should just lick my wounds and walk away.
    Thanks for trying.

  • hilclimer Dec 25, 2007

Anyone need a parts tv with a new D Board?

  • hilclimer Dec 25, 2007

The set is 2 years old. The reason for low hours is that it is in the rec room downstairs and only gets used during Christmas and Thanksgiving when we have company. The warranty only for 1 year and the place I bought it from was bought out and they don't work on Sony.

  • hilclimer Dec 26, 2007

Do I perform these checks for the few seconds the set is powering up or should the voltage be present even after it goes into the diagnostic
    blinking light phase.

  • hilclimer Dec 28, 2007

I'm going to see if I can get a service manual because some of the terms and names you use are a little above my expertise. I've got just elementary electronics knowledge and the names you use for the boards are greek to me.
Is what your calling the deflection board the same as the convergence board (G). Which is the crt board? Sorry if you thought you were dealing with someone having more TV experience.
I'm better @ PLC's and Computers. I also cannot find any spark gap bulb for the Flyback transformer. Is it an LED attached to the FBT or separate.

  • hilclimer Dec 31, 2007

I now have a service manual for reference

  • hilclimer Jan 01, 2008

One of my replies did not post. I checked the video voltage @ the plug on wires that said 210v and grd. The other two wires were h+ and H-. On power up I got 90 volts for about 2 seconds then it dropped to 60 volts for a second then 0 volts for about 3 seconds then the set went into protection mode.

It sounds like high voltage is leaking through the power supply and cousing the tv to shut down to protect itself test your output voltages on the power supply, each one should be rated on the step down transformer on the board, dont make it harder than it actually is. i can tell by the way you talk you have some knowledge always start at the basics. i think you will find your problem in the power supply leaking voltage. the sony projection tv is having this problem pretty common.

Yes, your tv has tubes but not only one 3. You said the screen flash white, that means all 3 crt's are flashing in the same time and I don't think all 3 are in short. After me your's high voltage protection it's not working well. Check close to FBT you have an spark-gap bulb. Is it flashing when you start the tv? Check B+ voltage should be 135 volts, or the best solution is to check video voltage 200 volts. I think is missing. You can check it on the crt pcb. let me know about that.
to discharge the capacitors you just need a 100 ohm resistor/ 1 watt and short the capacitor terminal with it for few seconds.

Yes, you have to check in that short time. When it's goes in protection mode the voltage is not present anymore. I sugest you to turn it on and to remove the plug cord imediatly. After that go behind the tv and be prepared to mesure the voltage and to remove the plug before the tv shut off.

I still belive in prop of 99% your 200v video voltage is not present. I don't have the diagram with me but check what connector goes from deflection board to crt board with that voltage and disconnect it. Try to start the tv with this disconnected. It should stay on without picture 20-30 seconds. If it's like that for sure I'm right and I'll tell you what to do.

  • Eduard P Dec 28, 2007

The deflection board is the one with FBT on it. You have one connector with 4 or 6 wires who goes from this board to CRT boards - you have 3 of them on the neck of each CRT. Just look carefully because SONY allways has the voltage wrote on the board close to connectors. One of these wires are carrying 200 volts to video IC's. Mesure that voltage. I'm sure is missing.

  • Eduard P Dec 29, 2007

It's the first connector close to FBT with 4 wires on it. Check the voltage there.

  • Eduard P Jan 02, 2008

Yes, it's exactly what I thought. Go back on the 200v line and see what's wrong. You should find a capacitor (usually 47mF/250v), a diode and a resistor close to FBT. Check them all but make att. to the resistor. Is a small value 0.47-1 ohm and if is open replace it, but also check the video amplifiers (are on the crt boards on the neck of the crt's). Let me know how's going.

It looks like there is a voltage overload within the circuits, in the A or B boards. Sorry but it looks like you have purchased the wrong boards.

Depending on the board costs I would just suggest calling a repair man, he may be able to isolate the problem easily. You may be able to suggest giving him the boards you have purchased as an offset to the service price.

Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes
to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 &
516 and the jungle IC, IC206.

i found this site very helpfull for sony probelms of blinks...
    u please have a look..

  • dewan nafees ahmed Dec 28, 2007

its has all basic explanations of the blink codes. also i would recommend you to read the forums below that information.

    it will also help you.

  • dewan nafees ahmed Dec 28, 2007

see the fourth and fifth comments. they are specially for you i feel brother. have a look at them please.

  • dewan nafees ahmed Dec 28, 2007

i also found that there is a great problem solver for TVs in that site. named Larry Dillon <>

his solutions are really good and helping many out there.

but i found this info and all stuff just today morning.
so i was not able to convey it to you in my first posts.
    sorry and thanks

  • dewan nafees ahmed Dec 28, 2007

very sorry for this delayed replies brother.
i forgot to do a follow up of your problem. i really dint mean to hurt you. i wil try my best to help you now.

if you got how many times it blinks.
    go to this site now.

this has detailed explanation of sony error codes of blinking lights.

but as far as i would suggest you. take your manual and see for that blinking error.
    it will explain you much.

if u dont have a manual and wish to buy one for you means go here.

would like you to give that a shot on puffed 1000uf 16v caps on the DM
Module . I pull the DM Module out and make sure enough the caps were
puffed on the top. Replace them, put the TV back together and the TV
may come back on. the TV did the "Black Screen of Death" on you again
You may have other bad capacitors in the sweep power
supply, the vertical sweep circuit, or possibly in the main power
supply. They may be swollen on the top just like the DM board was. This
is obviously another problem that developed in the set around the same
time the DM started failing. If the sound goes out also when the
picture goes out, I would think the problem is in the Main power supply
or the sweep power supply. You also may want to try the built in
diagnostics with the help of ur manual given for you.

if u ask how you are going to test the capacitors means here is solution for you:
going to need the right test equipment my friend. An ESR capacitor type
checker is first. If your not a tech and have no solid state repair
experience, play it safe and call out a pro to assist you in this type
of repair. If you do not know how to check capacitors, no insult my
friend but a TV set is no place to be experimenting around inside of.
Good Luck and let meknow how you made out.

if that capacitors turn faulty means order the capacitors and cal the service man to solder them for you.

have instructions manuals on Mitsubishi DM board repair.. if u want it
leave me your mail ID.. i will forward it to you tomm morning. its
night here. am going to sleep.thank you for co-operation.
sorry again for giving you this much trouble. bye

My KP-51HW40 clicks off after running for a period. The red power light blinks when it goes off but screen stays dark. When TV is shut off for a while it restarts and runs fine. The "On"...

KP-51HW40 shuts off due to incorrect white balance and blue arch lines is an evidence of that incorrect white balance. I hope tv standby red light would flashing 5 times then 3 seconds pause and again 5 times when tv shuts down.
This is rear projection tv that has three picture tubes (red-green-blue) inside to generate picture that projected at front screen. These three picture tubes must be drive with correct drive voltage to produce good picture of each color.
Solution for your tv problem is Screen Voltage adjustment that can be done easily if you are handy with electronics stuff repair.
Let me know your expertise level to guide you more and if you feel unconformable by tv repair then local tv repairman will help you to adjust white balance in tv.
Hope these info will help you.

Sony KP-57WS510 red light blinking 5x

Try connecting the TV directly to a different wall outlet and check. If the issue persists, try power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue persists, then the TV requires service.

Sony, tv comes on color fine, then turns red

I had the same problem with my TV, but the hue was blue. I was told that not only did I have to replace the picture tube that wasn't staying on, but I would have to replace them all because they would not mix properly. After much investigation, I found that there is an adjustment for a variable power supply to each tube that can brighten and lighten each tube. I adjusted the RED pot and my picture color issue was resolved! To access this adjustment you must remove the front panel on the TV. At the bottom corners there are two small screw covers that you must remove. Then un-screw the screws under the covers. Then pull the front panel off of the TV, (it hooks under the top near the screen so it will swing out from the bottom). Now remove the wooden panel in the center, (four screws). The pot adjustments are at the bottom of the TV. They are marked for Red, Blue, and Green. They are extremely sensitive, don't turn them much! If you over adjust you will get red, green, or blue lines on your screen. Adjust back down to remove these, (this is also the remedy for removing these lines that can appear over time). Good Luck and God Bless!

Same thing happened to me. I had to get it fixed. They said it was a "tube".

Now, my problem (7 months after getting it fixed) is that it suddenly seems a lot dimmer. I'm not 100% sure, and was wondering if there was some kind of diagnostic to run to find out for sure.
