Hi I mistakenly bought a Smartdisk Firelite with a FireWire connection. On my SONY laptop I only have USB ports. Can I purchase an adaptor so that I can make use of the portable hard drive? Hope you can help - an expensive mistake on my part!

I have firelite external and it's not working. There's light but no spinning sound. what can I do?

This a firewire drive and needs to plugged into a firewire port to spin up. If you do not have a firewire port on your computer (most PC's don't) it will not work. I don't believe a firewire to USB connector will pass enough power to the drive to spin it up.

Change you usb port or replace the smartdisk's usb cable, probably the current one if broken. Also restart the pc whilst the smartdisk is connected. It shd be recognised now.

I have a Firelite Smartdisk External 60G hard drive - Model #FWFL60-N which I bought to back up my previous MacBook. It only has FireWire outlets and cable with only FireWire ends - no USB port...

Hi Selina It was a big mistake for Apple to omit the FW port on the white MacBook. The problem you hilite is the reason I don't recommentd the macbook to any of my clients. However, the problem is solveable - although you may/will have to do some breaking and entering.
There is no cable adaptor - nor will there ever be, the protocols are so radically different that they can never talk to each other.
The simplest option is to connect your drive to another mac that has got FW (800 or 400 - it doesn't matter as long as the cable will connect the two units) then use file sharing to transfer the conent of the drive to you MacBook either by ethernet (preferable) or by wifi (much slower).
The breaking and entereing option imvolves opening up the firelilte and removing its HD (it's easy) then get a unit like this Overview or this http://www.maplin.co.uk/sata-hard-drive-usb-docking-station-222999
There are other much cheaper units and they all work fairly well. I have several as I'm up against your problem regularly

What external power does SmartDisk FireLite FWFL120-N take?

Many USB power supplies will have the right plug. I picked one up by buying a cheap USB hub, What you want to look for (most likely on the bottom of the power supply) is VOLTAGE Output: 5.0 VDC, POWER Output: 1.0 amp or (1000ma) and the center hole is the positive side. I have even seen some BluTooth earpiece charges that supply what you need.

Hope that this will help.

My firelite smartdisk model cord does not fit into my new macbook air. can i buy a cord that has a usb port at one end? thx

The MacBook Air has one USB port. Most computer stores have many different plugs on the other end that will fit your SmartDisk. Most of the SmartDisk units use the mini USB plug. It is the same as many digital cameras use.

Tiger Direct, and MicroCenter also have many different adapters, and adapter kits to use on all kinds of USB devices.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if there are any more questions.

PS: I use a 160GB SmartDisk on all of my Macs, and PCs. Get way to move data without conflicts.

My smartdisk firelite does not appear anywhere on my computer

Hi,

Sounds like you have a hardware failure either in the drive enclosure or the hard drive itself.

I suspect you may get lucky and find out it's just some of the circuitry in the smartdisk shell that is damaged.

Take the Smartdisk unit to your nearest PC shop and ask the technicians there to remove the Hard Drive and put it in a new enclosure to test it. If it works in the new enclosure, buy the enclosure and your done. If it doesn't work in the new enclosure then you may be suffering from worse issues that will require the help of a pro.

Either way let me know how you make out, if you need a pro for the next step, reply back with you location(Country, State, City) and I will refer you to the closest facility who can assist you.

Hope this Helps FixYa,

Chris
