Question about Arris SURFboard SB4220 Modem

1 Answer

I'm trying to hook up my modem through my router. My last router had an ip address of its own which I used to tell it to work through the router. Does the sb4220?

My modem works (receives and distributes internet appropriately to one device at a time) but it doesn't work through my router. I know the router works fine because I removed it from another computer and had to reset the modem and tell it to run specifically through the computer. So back to my original (and as yet unanswered) question: is there a standard IP address for the sb4220 modem?

You may want to have the modem working with your system first and hook up your router after wards.
Disconnect your router and modem.
Reboot your system.
Run your hard wire direct to your SB4220 from computer net card.
Allow to load whatever drivers necessary.
On your computer type ipconfig /all This will show you all your information.
Try the internet and see if it works. If you know the ip of your carrier, Type ping ????? ie: Ping comcast.net
If you recv. a timeout you still have problems.
If you succeed, you are their.

If not, type ipconfig /renew This will reset your ip and configurations.
Now, hook up your router and you should be their.

In answer to your question, yes the modem does have its own IP address. You can not use this IP and it can be found on the bottom of the unit.. Look for Mac IP

Again, the information in which I gave to you prier to this comment, is the best way to obtain your IP configuration.

The MAC (not "Mac") address on network devices is NOT an IP address. "MAC" stands for Media Access Control. Google it.

We hooked up the router and all the cords but there isn't any Internet, we even reset it, help please!

Connect the WAN port to your modem(box from your internet provider). Turn off the Modem for 20 minutes. This will make it forget the last device connected to it and accept the new device. If it does not work, you need to tell your Internet provider that you connected a new router and the modem doesn't give it an IP address.

Hi, Our modem seems to work fine when plugged directly into a computer (we get internet okay), but if we plug it into anything else it won't get internet. We've tried two different routers and a Wii and...

Hello,
Without further information, my best guess is that your modem has the same IP address as the common IP address for routers and probably the Wii. Most wireless routers have the address 192.168.1.1
Try connecting a computer using a hard line (a network cable) to your router and type in this address, it will most likely come up. If it does change it's static address to 192.168.1.12 (actually any number behind the last period above 1 and under 255.). Also set its gateway to 192.168.1.1 to access your modem. (Also in the router settings which are found by typing the address mentioned above, 192.168.1.1) Be sure to note this new address if you want to access your router without resetting it and using a hard line again. The Wii should automatically pick up signal from the wireless router. If for some reason you want to switch between the Wii and a Router by way of hardline, you must contact the maker of your cable modem (or cable company) and find out what the IP address is in order to access it's settings (the same way; by typing it's IP address into a browsers address bar.) By setting the modem to have a different IP there would be no conflict with the other products which (rightly) have the IP address of 192.168.1.1 as a default.
Hope this helps!

No ip address

Many people need to connect additional computers or game consoles. To do this, most use a home network router, which shares a single IP address across multiple computers. No special configuration of your Shaw service or modem is required.

For information on how to configure a home network, consult the manufacturer's documentation included with the hub or router you have purchased.

  • Access the router configuration page.
  • Set the router to use Cable as Internet connection type.

How to obtain new WAN ip-address

For the router it should suffice just to cycle its power.
However, the behavior of the ISP's DHCP server may also be part of your problem. Most likely, it also will try to assign the same address as before, if still available.
So what you can try is to switch off your router and modem for a few hours (e.g. over night) and see if you get a different address.
Of course, this won't work if you have a statically assigned IP address, as this is often the case with cable modems. In this case your only chance is to contact the provider and ask them to change your IP address. You should of course be able to offer a very good explanation then...

LinkSys router early deaths

Your cable modem has a ip address of 192.168.1.1 and your router probably has the same ip address. Hook your computer up to the router and change the ip address to 192.168.9.1. On your router change the router mode to static ip address mode. Then you will need to know your username and password from you cable company, and the Domain Number. Then connect the cable back to the wan port from the modem and the other end to the wan port of the router. Connect the computer to the first lan port on the router and type 192.168.9.1 go to the status page and tell it to connect.

Your cable company is giving you one ip addres and have to pay for another for more than one computer. What are you doing is using the router to receive the first ip address and distrubting out to the other computers.

How can I my up my comcast netgear modems wireless to work? when I try my PS3 it detects a sginal but wont obtain an IP address. The same with my lap top.

You have to change the ipddress on the router different then the modem. For example 192.168.9.1 and leave the modems ip alone. Plug the cable into the Lan port of the router. Go to the setup screen on the router and tell give your username and password that
Comcast gives you. You will need comcast gateway address and dns numbers. There will be a connect button on the router and tell it connect it to the modem. You are trying to let the router receive that only ip address.

Cannot share my cable modem connection

You need to connect a router to the cable modem.  The router then gets an IP address from Comcast and provides a gateway between the computers connected to the router.
The modem expects to communicate with a single Ethernet device, and provides an IP address to the first device that provides a piece of data called a MAC address.  By placing a router in-between, the router gets the IP address that lets you communicate on the Internet.  It provides local IP addresses to the equipment connected to the local Ethernet and "routes" those to the Internet.  You can either hook your two devices into the router if it has enough ports, or hook you switch to the router and hook your PC and PS3 into the switch.

Zonet zsr1134we router abruptly stopped working

make sure your modem and your router are not using the same ip address. Many items default to 192.168.1.1. A reset of either device could return it to use this ip address.

No Internet is exactly what you get if your modem is 192.168.1.1 and your router is 192.168.1.1. The problem can happen if either device give out an ip address already used on the network. Change which ever one you can most easily find the documentation on.

I don't recommend using static ip addresses internally, unless your documentation requires it for your setup. changing the set of ip addresses that are distributed by DHCP is the best was around this problem.

No internet through ports

Try hooking up the PC through the router, then unplugging the modem and plug it back in. Once that is up, do the same to the router and try it again.

Oftentimes if you're limited to one IP address, it will be assigned to your PC, and your router will be unable to get one. Resetting the modem frees the IP address and allows the router to get it.
