This can be caused by several things. The games may need cleaning, the system may need cleaning or the games may not be connecting properly.

Games can be cleaned with a q-tip (that's what I use). I don't know what you'd use to clean the system if you don't have the cleaner cartridge. (The fix link below talks about opening it up to clean it before it gets to repairing the connector.)

Try holding the games down while they are in the system, if they work now it's probably the connector. If it's the connector you can either replace it, try to fix it yourself (don't try this if you aren't good with a screwdriver/tools) or use something to hold the games down. (I jam a Lego block in mine. 1 long block with a thin block on it.)

If the games you are trying aren't Nintendo licensed, they may be failing the lockout chip test. (They should have a Nintendo seal on the label)

Good luck.

Hold the game down in the console until it blinks but shows the game on and off. place a game on top of the one you are holding down. make sure the game is still showing blinking on and off then press reset. this is how i get my nes to play everytime!

Console blinks when game is loaded

Hi there, here's a fix that may help, I've done it on quite a few NES and all have started working. Basically the pins that connect to the cartridge have been pushed flat over time so your not getting a clean connection.

Nes light keep's blinking

well, heres what you do.. turn it off, and eject the cartridge.. blow in the bottom where the chip is to get rid of any dust, and put it back in.. turn it on.. if it still blinks, turn it off, and eject the game again.. this time blow into the nes itself.. put the game back in, and turn it on.. if its STILL blinking, grab another cartridge, and TURN OFF THE NES its very important. press down on the game you want to play, like your going to eject it, but instead of letting it up, slide that second cartridge you grabbed in on top of the first one.. turn the nes on, and enjoy...

it SHOULD work... if not, try taking a q-tip and dipping it in hydrogen peroxide, and cleaning the nes and game.

I have an old Nintendo nes and the power button keeps blinking on and off.

Okay, the blinking is not fixed by a new 72-pin; thats a common misconception. You need to disable your NES lock-out chip, its the reason games blink. Cut the 4th pin on your NES chip under the motherboard, its called "3193A". Do it at your own risk, if your remove it correctly the NES will work perfectly and never blink ever again.
