First and foremost inquiry, is the fridge cooling down the contents stored inside the fridge?

Second Q is it cooling the contents as per the settings of the thermostat??

A1- if the fridge is NOT cooling despite the compressor running - Then the problem is leakage of the refrigerant gas(Freon, CF4, etc). Since the cooling can only be achieved if there is sufficient refrgerant gas, or the compessor is running but its not actually compressing, i.e. compressor has to be replaced. (rare phenomena )

A-2 The thermostat unit is malfunctioning, i.e. its reading the inside temprature as higher than the actual temp. inside. In this case only the thermostat sensor has to be replaced only, since it's reading/recording/showing the measured temp to be quite high than actual, switching on the Compressor, which due to extra running results in overheating the compressor and the safety device for the compressor trips, switching the compressor off when its gets overheated to prevent damage of the compressor.

My suggestion is to attend to the prob. asap.Delaying the repair may result in the compressor damage which has to replaced since its casing is sealed & has to be cut by a gas cutter. This repair is not dependable, so a new compressor is the only choice.

After detailing so much I should have given first priority to find out if the doors are closing and remaining closed via magnetic pull (the most common but essential element), otherwise the fridge will never be able to cool anything inside & making ice impossible..................sodeep

When the compressor tries to come on, why does it click and hum, then clicks off?

Two causes for that situation. The compressor has a start relay and a overload mounted on the 3 prongs. When the relay/overload is bad, compressor will kick on, hum, then a click sound. The click is the overload. Or, the compressor is drawing too much power and the compressor is bad. 90% of time it's the relay/overload but you need to check and make sure fan is running by compressor and coils underneath are not clogged up. Poor air flow around compressor can cause overload to go bad.

I installed a new defrost timer and the compressor clicks but it will not come on. i have a kenmore ref 1069535780

The compressor clicking, this is related to faulty start up relay/ capacitor of compressor.this relay lets the compressor to start.if this relay is weak or faulty, then it will just click, but not let the compressor to start. This relay needs to be checked and replaced.--------- Click the link below for more help:-- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/06/refrigerator-compressor-clicks-but-it.html ------------ This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Compressor clicking on very loud every couple

it sounds to me like your loosing your compressor, but not really the clicks are comming from the realy and overload, they are attached to the compressor, and turn it on and off
replace those two and you should be ok
www.appliancepartspros.com

My refrigerator dosen't cool or freeze

the hot piece is the compressor.the clicking is the relay trying to start the compressor.generaly when im out on a service call and the compressor is hot and relay clicking the compressor has failed internally.because if the relay was clicking but the compressor was not hot there was a chance only the relay was bad and not allowing power into the compressor.but because the compressor is hot that tells me the relay is letting the power to the compressor but the compressor cant do anything with it because it locked up and its absorbing that power getting hot and then clicking on overload you could try a relay but i don't think it will help. God bless ,tom

Maytag refrigerator clicking

it sounds like a bad:
  • ·       start switch (on the side of the compressor) or
  • ·        compressor itself

the start switch clicks  off usually when the compressor is pulling too many amps or the compressor is overheating. if the compressor is not even running then its probably not overheating.
so either the compressor is pulling too many amps (bad compressor) or the start switch is bad and cannot handle the amps required to start the compressor.
