Question about Sewing Machines

1 Answer

Do you have a stitch lenght dial for an Elna Su 62 sewing machine? Also a closing latch assembly for this machine's metal case. Do you know the parts numbers for these? Thanks, Helen Countryman helncoun@comcast.net

Directions for making a buttonhole with an Elna SU

A transcript from the Elna SU manual reads as follows, and the manual can be viewed on line at http://sewingonline.co.uk/instructions/elnasp/

First make a few trial runs with a scrap of material exactly as the buttonhole will be stitched, with the machine adjusted as you intend to use it.
1. Use the embroidery and buttonhole foot. It can be chnged without a screwdriver by using the fixation screw.- With the stitch width knob at "0", turn the selector to zigzag "1".
2. De-center the needle to the left.
3. Set the stitch width knob at 2, with the solid mark on top.
4. Set the stitch length dial between 1/2 and 1/4.
5. a) Mark the desired length on the material.
b) Sew the first side of the buttonhole. Stop with the needle in the material and the mark (right).
c) Raise the foot and pivot the material round the needle. Lower the foot and raise the needle.
6. a) Set the stitch width knob at 4.
b) Sew a few stitches. Raise the needle.
7. a) Set the stitch width knob at 2.
b) Sew the second side and stop just short of the length of the first. Raise the needle.
8. a) Set the stitch width knob at 4.
b) Finish off the buttonhole by sewing a few stitches. Raise the needle.
9. a) Set the stitch width knob at "0".
b) Sew a few stitches to fasten the threads, holding the material back by hand.
10. Open with the buttonhole knife, which you will find in the accessory box.

Elna SU needle position lever is very stiff

this is probably due to lack of use and just stiffening up of this lever, best thing is to take off the top cover and get some triflow oil into the lever area, then try to work it back and forwards. First though, always set the stitch length and stitch width dials to zero before you try to move the needle dial, this applies to changing the stitch selector too, always turn width and length to zero first to avoid wear on these parts internally.

If you are happy to delve a bit deeper into your machine internally you might want to join the Yahoo group called Elna Heirlooms where other Swiss elna owners share their love and knowledge of these machines, there will be message thread on this issue there for sure.

I have an Elna Elnita air electronic and cannot figure out how to backstitch. I have always owned Elna Su air electronics but this little machine I can't figure out the backstitch

Unless there is a specific button to do reverse stitching, you could try pressing the foot peddle 'backwards' .. in other words, press with your heel rather than your toe. Some foot peddles are configured this way.

How to embroider with elna su electronic

There are a couple of Elna SU models, the Star Series SU is white with a blue top panel. Or the air electronic SU is a white machine and a dozen years newer (80's). Both have a disc elnagraph reader in a flap on top of the machine and sew a range of stitches involving either side to side stitch formation or side to side and forwards and backwards, albiet revolutionary when new but not what modern computerised embroidery machines can produce now. To use, you set stitch width and length dials to zero, then insert the black disc into the elnagraph ensuring you line up the disc with a little finger underneath. There should be a red marking on the disc and the shaft to assist with this. Press down until the disc clicks into place. Now turn stitch length to S for supermatic and width to 4 and sew. You can vary the stitch width to adjust stitch and the AE also has a little dial that elongates or closes up the stitch. Try machine embroidery thread for a silky stitch especially with satin stitch where the thread is close together. Also wing needles can be interesting when using the turkish hem stitch disc.

I have star series elna 62 Supermatic, free arm with blue top, auto buttonhole. It winds bobbin slowly only if started by hand turning fly wheel, but makes a clunky noise. Will not stitch or move to...

Sounds like a drive issue with your Star Series, I'd check out yellow pages and phone a few sewing machine guys until you find someone who knows the vintage Elnas and can take a look at it. Or you could join the Yahoo group Elna Heirlooms and ask some of the guys on there who know these machines well. They may give you enough info to at least take it apart and take a look inside yourself.

There are a few web sites selling parts, www. sewingpartsonline.com has parts for this model listed including a motor. http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/elna-star-62-sewing-machine-parts.aspx

This is a great machine, I have one too and love it. I bought mine 2nd hand in 1988 and it still sews beautifully, outlasting my Elna Air Electronic SU. Mine has never been to a serviceman while I've had it, I always keep it in the case and inside a cupboard, and give it a good clean and oil when I pull it out to use. Its straight stitch is beautiful to behold.

I have a old Elna machine. The air electronic SU 390 B. I have lost the manual and am trying to do buttonholes on a dress. I have forgotten the sequence of nob adjustments to complete the process.

Is this the duplex model with the base that fits into a sewing cabinet?

My Elna booklet lists a SP "air electronic" duplex (CL.39), if so, then it would be same stitches as the 38, yellow front panel, 7 built in stitches and automatic knob with blue markings for buttonholing.

Here is the SU manual images for buttonholing, should be exactly the same for the SP.

tally_girl_4.jpg Instructions are:
use buttonhole foot. turn the 3 dials to buttonhole marked in blue (stitch selection, width and length).
Mark length of buttonhol on the material. Place work under foot with the mark in the middile fo the foot, the start being directly below the needle. sew the first side, raise the needle. Turn stitch width dial to 2, blue. Sew a few stitches for bartack. Raise the needle.
Turn stitch width dial to 3 blue. sew the second side. stop just short of the first side. Raise the needle.
turn the stitch width dial to 4 blue. sew a few stitches for bartack. Raise the needle.
Turn stitch width dial to "fastening off stitch" blue dot. Sew a few stitches, holding back the material by hand. Raise needle, lift pressure foot and remove work, triming off threads.
Open the buttonhole with your seam ripper (put a pin across the end to avoid any nasties).

I have and Elna su sewing machine and i can't get it to zig zag. Please refresh my memory on the settings i should have it on.

Depends on which SU you have, but you need to move the stitch selector to Zig Zag, then set the stitch length to 2.5 and the stitch width to at least 2.

On the earlier models the stitch selector is a wheel inside the flap on the top of the machine, on the air electronics, it is a coloured dial.

If this doesn't help, check if you've inadvertently moved the needle position to the side setting.
