No sound on lap top with vista
Your best bet is to go to windows update and let it scan your system, when it finishes it will give you two choices Express and Custom. Choose custom and then look in the optional upgrades. That is where the hardware upgrades will be. look for your sound device drivers and download them and install.
OK, go to the device manager in the control panel and scroll down to the sound, game and video controllers. Hit the plus sign and look at the devices installed. right click on each one and see if they are enabled. Try to update the driver by right clicking on them and choose update drivers, this will again force windows to search and if it missed it, install a fresh driver. If not at the very least right down the exact name of the device, then right click on the device and click on the drivers tab. write down the version number and the date of the current driver. You can take that information to the device manufacturer's support / driver page and get a fresh Vista driver straight from them. Download and install the driver, it will install where it needs to. Now go back to the control panel page, scroll down to sound. Look in te first tab that comes up and make sure it has speakers listed, might even say high def audio...highlight this and make sure it is set to default.Click on properties and make sure it is enabled. Go back to the sound page where the devices are listed again and look at the lower left corner, there should be a configure button. Click on that when the speakers title is highlighted. Here you can configure your speaker arrangement and test it. Good luck

Hi Parrot, I have run the upgrade twice but it doesn't give me the options of Express or Custom.
Any further assistance would be much appreciated
