I bought a 37 inch vizio today and need to know how to turn on CC. I have it in the on position but don't know how to activate it.

Just follow these steps:
1.Press the Vizio Internet Apps button on your remote (located immediately beneath the red, yellow, green, and blue buttons, below the arrow buttons).
2.Select the Netflix app.
3.Press Ok.
4.Select Sign In.
5.A code will appear.

This problem can be caused by Bad Capacitors, they will be swollen or vented on Top.
Check the power supply board for Bad Caps.

Try this combination.

1) Start with the cable box turned on and TV on tuned to the cable box.

2) Press the POWER button for the cable box and then quickly press the MENU button.

3) This should bring up the user setting menu. Use the arrow keys on remote to go to Closed Caption and press right arrow button this should bring up the closed caption menu.

4) Press the OK button and this should either turn CC on or off.

5) Once Closed Caption is turned off press LEFT ARROW button to return to User Settings Menu.

6) Press the POWER button to turn the Cable box back on and the Closed Caption should be gone....

The main board has gone bad. Replace the board will fix it.

I believe the problem is a failing main board i had a 37 inch vizio that had similar problem and was fixed 100% by replacing main board. i know have the 42 inch and have experianced dark screen a few times im still looking into it.

it sounds like you have a glitch in your tv. i would hope that you have the warranrty for it. and i would contact vizio right away and tell them about your problem and they will have to fix the issue. hope this helps you.
