Question about Sewing Machines

1 Answer

I have an Elna that I learned to sew on in 1958. It works, but it makes a very loud "clunking" sound that I can feel when I turn the wheel by hand.

Sounds like the friction pulley on the motor has some flat spots from sitting in one place for an extended period of time. The parts are still available from any sewing machine repair shop.

Wheel won't turn

it's possible that there is a broken or loose part, it would be a good idea to have the sewing machine checked.

My brother started making a loud noise when sewing pant fabrics

Your machine is complaining because it doesn't have the power to push through the layers of fabric. That clunking noise is the gears in the machine skipping and being sheered off (or it will be eventually) STOP!

If you feel that you need to continue... stop when it does this noise and use the HAND WHEEL. You'll also need to make sure that the presser foot remains level while going over thick seams.

I have star series elna 62 Supermatic, free arm with blue top, auto buttonhole. It winds bobbin slowly only if started by hand turning fly wheel, but makes a clunky noise. Will not stitch or move to...

Sounds like a drive issue with your Star Series, I'd check out yellow pages and phone a few sewing machine guys until you find someone who knows the vintage Elnas and can take a look at it. Or you could join the Yahoo group Elna Heirlooms and ask some of the guys on there who know these machines well. They may give you enough info to at least take it apart and take a look inside yourself.

There are a few web sites selling parts, www. sewingpartsonline.com has parts for this model listed including a motor. http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/elna-star-62-sewing-machine-parts.aspx

This is a great machine, I have one too and love it. I bought mine 2nd hand in 1988 and it still sews beautifully, outlasting my Elna Air Electronic SU. Mine has never been to a serviceman while I've had it, I always keep it in the case and inside a cupboard, and give it a good clean and oil when I pull it out to use. Its straight stitch is beautiful to behold.

Need to know the bobbin number for an Elna Supermatic sewing machine made during the years 1958-63 approx.

Cut to the chase and save time, ask Elna direct...here is the link to Global site, choose your country and email them or phone.

Which bobbin number do I use for an Elna Supermatic sewing machine made during the period of time 1958-63?

You want the Swiss Elna bobbins, these are metal with holes on one side only and slightly dished. They may be imprinted with "Swiss made" on the core of the bobbin. Elna code number is 426000
