WHAT ARE THE SMALL SQAURES FOR ON THE WII?

Does it show ''disc error'' when inserting an older (non ''u'') game disc? If _not_, then the problem is that you need to be connected to the internet and register and select subscription services, etc... The latest game player scam is that these new players only work while connected to the internet, and depending on the player, some will not play more than one player without a multi player MONTHLY subscription fee of $15 per month! (OUCH!!!)

• The Wii console is only compatible with Wii and GameCube discs. It is not compatible with DVDs or discs made for other home consoles. Verify that the disc you are inserting is compatible with the Wii system.
• An error message may display if the disc is ejected during play. Return to the HOME Menu before changing discs.
• Verify that the console is placed correctly.
• If the Wii console is lying flat, the game disc slot should be above all three buttons and the SD Card slot.
• If the Wii console is standing vertically, the power button should be on the top and the console should be in the stand. Note: Only Wii consoles with model number RVL-001 are intended to be placed vertically.

• Verify that the disc is being inserted properly.
• If the console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards.
• If the console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right.

• Check the non-printed side of the game disc for dirt or severe damage (such as scratches or cracks).
• If the disc is dirty, try cleaning the game disc.

To clean disc:

1. Dampen a clean, soft, cotton cloth with water.
2. Use straight strokes and wipe the disc (non-labeled side) from the inside rim to the outside rim.
3. Using a dry part of the cloth, repeat step 2 to dry the disc.
4. After all of the water is gone, let the disc sit for at least two minutes to completely dry before inserting it into the Wii console.

If the disc is damaged or scratched, it will need to be replaced or you can possibly taken it to a game store or movie store to get it resurfaced (buffed)

Have you tried inserting other game discs? like 3 types of disc. If your Wii console plays those discs and don't play with the game disc that you wanted to play, then the format of that disc is not recognized by console. Some disc formats are sometimes incompatible with the player console.

Made a video showing how I fixed this exact problem on a Wii.

If Wii gives Unable to read Disc Error, first step you need to check is to try another disc or clean the exisitng disc. This will confirm that problem is with either Wii or Disc.
