Old Lense and new camera

I have just ordered a NIkon D40X digital camera. I have an older Vivitar 70-300mm f4.2-f5.8Macro 1:4X N/AI-S lense. Can I use this lense on this camera? Are there adapters available if the footings are different? Will the digiatl camera understand what lense is on it?

Re: Old Lense and new camera

Here is a link to the lens limitations of the D40, same for the D40X:

The camera will not recognize the lens but you can take pictures setting speed and aperture manually. Since you see results after you take the picture, you can make adjustments to correct your exposure

I would like to use my Sigma 600 Mirror lense on Nikon M80 digital camara body lense was used on a Pentax Super A camara before can it fit

Sorry, no. If it fit onto a Pentax camera then the lens has a Pentax mount. The Nikon (I assume you mean the D80 digital camera, or perhaps the N80 film camera) has a Nikon mount. Since the Nikon mount has a deeper flange distance than the Pentax mount, there are no adapters available to allow you to fit a Pentax-mount lens onto a Nikon camera.

Using auto focus 35-55 mm lens on d40x will not take picture but if I use manual focus, I can take picture.

It is because the lense is only an AF lense. The d40x doesn't have an on-body auto focus motor so that needs to be on the lense. I have a d60 and have the same problems. You can use the manual focus on the AF lenses; however, to use auto focus, you need to buy an AF-S lense. It's disappointing I know, but that's the price we must pay for saving on our body lol

Lense will not work with SLR Nikon D90

This lens is too old for the D90, it has not got the electronics for metering and autofocus.
You can use it manually in M mode but you will have to set the aperture and shutter yourself.
The D90 manual has a section on compatible lenses, page 228 in my version.
This recommends CPU lenses for the D90, type G and D.

it depends what mount your vivitar lenses have - you can easily search ebay for mount adaptors that will allow you to use most older lenses on the 4/3 body, but you will only be able to use manual focus and need to work in aperature priority or fully manual mode. A generic adaptor for a OM, Nikon, Pentax or Contax mount should cost around $20. you should read up on them as there are some differences with how they are made and function, but basically are just mechanical coupling devices that fit the lense to the camera. remember, you lose all automatic features

Nikon D40x AF-S Nikkor 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 GII ED Lense Trouble

I've found the same thing with my D40x and the 18-55mm AF-S lens. I took a really close look at it and found that the mount on the lens is badly worn on all three of the bayonet tangs and one is cracked at the base. What happens in my case is that the lens has movement when mounted on the camera - just enough to stop the contacts from mating properly. Hence, no photos. Am taking it to Nikon to get it fixed. I suggest if this is your problem, that you take it to the repair man.

Older Vivitar 28mm Lens on New Nikon D50 Digital Camera

Bob, there are several reasons why this won't work, mainly cost

An older manual focus wide angle will work in the manual mode on a D50. The can be had very cheap on eBay and the like.

Converting one that has a Canon FD mount to a Nikon is possible, but you would need one with a Nikon mount for parts. The focal plane distances are different between Nikon and Canon. An adapter for this is not possible without adding optics to compensate

Sigma 70-300mm DL Macro Super Lens compatibility for Nikon D40X DSLR Camera

Here is Nikon's specs of lens compatibility for the D40X:

Compatible Lenses*: Nikon F mount with AF coupling and AF contacts Type G or D AF Nikkor:
1) AF-S, AF-I: All functions supported;
2) Other Type G or D AF Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus
3) PC Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/2.8D: Can only be used in mode M; all other functions supported except autofocus
4) Other AF Nikkor*â¹/AI-P Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D Color Matrix Metering II
5) Non-CPU: Can be used in mode M, but exposure meter does not function; electronic range finder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster
6) IX Nikkor lenses cannot be used

Auto focusing problem

The D40 will only autofocus with the Nikkor AF-S lens...look for the AF-S in the lens title. For 3rd party lens, only SIGMA with the USM title will autofocus.

To use the will need to use the "Manual" mode of the camera.
