I had the same problem, but on a iMac G4, and got it to work with a macam driver. I had lost the installation disk to my Logitech QuickCam Chat, so it wasn't recognizing the camera. The Logitech website only offers driver downloads for PC.
Go here: http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/downloads.html and download the "current version" of the driver. Then install it on your machine, making sure to drag the "macam component" to the suggested Library> Quicktime folder. This will help it work with programs like Skype. If you only install the "macam," it will show you a camera image directly, but won't do anything else.
I do have a new computer and recently I did install Yahoo Messenger. After all I was trying to make a PC-to-PC call without any luck, because of sound unknown problem. The webcam is a Logitech QuickCamCommunicate STX. I also got a message from my computer saying that "This computer does not support the required audio compression format". I did try to make a short video and again no sound. Mistery to me,still. Any clues? Thanks,Cos.

How much memory is installed in your computer?
The camera uses quite a bit of your memory to operate properly and would
cause the poor video. Could be other
Issues, but worth checking.
Hope this helps. Bud
Have you tried reinstalling your drivers? Theres one available here http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SCANNER-Digital-CAMERA-WEBCAM/LOGITECH/Logitech-QuickCam-Communicate-STX.shtml
Have you updated DirectX?, I'm not sure if Vista has DX9.0 or 9.0c, but you could try and update DirectX before you install the cam software.
Also if the cam is usb, did you install the software "before" connecting the cam?, some people aren't aware that usb devices have to have the software installed first, before connecting the device.
Check the camera settings are not too high 320x480 or similair should be enough.
Have you installed Windows Messenger live, the new MSN and tried it with that?
If your'e problem persists try this problem page.
