Yeah its more then the lamp on this one the comb filter when bad on you thus giving you this darkness you are talking about the true fix here is replacement of the screen witch would probably be more then its worth to begin with @ 3,999.00 MSRP this rca had poor reviews on early faults that the manufacture stopped supporting this fast.. The likely-hood if this getting fixed depends on how much your willing to fork out but i am telling you the Truth you could get another TV and a couple more for the bedrooms for the price it will cost to fix i hate bad news but I do not like to lie its not worth my time or yours.

I want to send you shopping for your own good as the price of these units in LCD format just whoop the pants of these and are cheaper. If you do shop do not accept anything but sony!! Go bravia latest edition.

Good luck please do click accept if you like my advice otherwise i am open to dialog.. Thanks for making fixya your first choice..

HELLO I could not answer you last statement as we are having site make overs, So you thinking it may be one of the mirrors that is causing this darkness on the screen?

I want to tell you that is unlikely unless something got in there that could be causing this issue. I know the TV is front projected as you stated and maybe you point when I said replace the screen got mixed up with actually replacing mirrors what I meant was the TV as a whole.

You replacing a lamp would not cause darkness of any kind on the screen this would be other factors to this.. Mirror alignment could be a issue if the tv was moved around but I doubt that also.

The issue with darkness on the screen could be with the actual guns them self or the lamp you put in is not sufficient enough for the screen to be bright enough to be projected to the front.

At this point it would be cost worthy to have a estimate done on it for someone to come out now if they say its a major issue it would not be then worth it to fix as with this TV would be hard to find replacement parts/

First of all don’t place the TV where sunlight or room lighting will be directed toward the screen. Use soft or indirect lighting.
Regarding display one has to set it properly, i.e. the bulb which it needs to display is :-

Your HDTV is equipped with a special lamp system. Eventually, the lamp (like a light bulb) will need to be replaced and you’ll need to know your lamp type. Check the menu for your lamp type and write it down on page 1 for future reference (the lamp type has the same meaning as the lamp part number mentioned on page 1). The Lamp Power menu enables you to extend the life of the lamp (choose Longer Life), or provide the brightest possible picture (choose Brighter Picture).

When you first turn off your TV, the screen fades from blue to black. Once the screen goes black, the TV’s
internal lamp starts its cool-down cycle. If you try to turn on the TV during the cool-down cycle, the TV turns
back on and you’ll hear audio, but the picture will take a few moments to be displayed.

This is normal but if it is staying black, the bulb will have to be replaced with a new one, viz. TV Part Number 265109....sodeep

You have to be very carefull when replacing bulbs if you touch them the oil from hands or anything to make it dirty could be burning on the bulb and causing the black spot. there may be a chance to clean it with a soft dry cloth if it isnt already burned in.
this may not be the issue but i have seen it a few times where the bulb was dirty and just burned itself up.

IF the black area is a large rectangle, then you have enabled closed captioning. Work your way through the menus and turn this off. If a station does not broadcast the CC information, a large rectangular black box will appear.

Hope this helps,

Dan

Blackout area on screen

Make sure the TEXT and CAPTION options are turned off.

I am not sure about the Sonny's, but on my Toshiba a black box appears when I inadvertently leave one of the close captioning (CC) on for text or captions on (such as CC1, CC2, etc.).

Philips plasma tv vertical black stripe

Hi
If there is no picture behind the stripe and the edges are well-defined, then one of the display driver ICs has failed. Philips displays can be made by several manufacturers - usually Samsung. The ICs are bonded to the flexible ribbon in most cases, and replacement is an expensive specialist job - and in many cases is simply not possible.
A shadow on the picture is much better - usually due to interference.

Sony KDF-46E2000 - Screen Goes Blank

Ok, the solution for all our problems is in fact the lamp. I finally replaced my lamp and no problems to report. Sony should do something about this because I know I didn't have 8,000 hours on the lamp and it sounds like no one else has either. I tell you what, I'm NEVER buying another Sony product ever again. Not only did I have this problem but I bought a Sony Blu-Ray disc dvd player and I've had nothing but problems out of it. I keep getting firmware updates for it but it doesn't help and recently I bought a Sony Walkman MP3 player and for no reason it quit working, it would power up and immediately power off. Sony did replace it though (but of course it was only $70 compared to the prices of the tv and dvd player).
Anyway, if you are still having problems with your tv, the lamp door is on the right side, pop it open and there will be another door with a knob on it. Turn that knob counter clockwise to unlock it and pull it out. Inside that door you will see the handle for the lamp, put your finger through the loop and pull up and out at the same time, to put in the new lamp, push lamp straight in until it won't go in any further and puch down, it should then be locked in place. Replace both inner door and outer door and you are good to go.
Someone mentioned something about cleaning the dust from around the lamp. I tried that before I got my new lamp. It only worked for a day and gave out again. Hope this helps.
