I had the same problem, I just called WD and got them to repair it because it was still under warranty. When I received it, there was a new pogram and everything but it had been working.

Hello, I have an external hard drive western

First of all, I'd like to make sure I understand what you meant in regards to the simple pine connectors. I assume that they look like a series of jumper pins, is that correct? any pictures? If so, those connectors don't need to be connected to anything. They are there in case you want to bypass the USB connector.

Is this an USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 drive? Are you using the official WD cable to power this up? these drives (especially USB 3.0) tend to be power hungry, and if the cable is worn out or too long, then it may not deliver enough power to let the drive operate. Any other feedback would be good for me to understand your problem further =)

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

I have a Western Digital Passport that works fine

Western Digital Passports work perfectly on USB ports 2.0 that supplies 5v of electricity with a max of 500mA. If your computer was manufactured more than 5 years ago, it may be using the USB 1.1 which is slower than the current.

Could be a hard drive logic board issue since the computer bios recognizes the drive but the computer operating system does not. Not good.
