Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have an whirlpool cabrio that i bought back in 07, it was working fine until a few months ago it started flashing F1 and a constant OL error and will skip the wash. I called whirlpool On monday after reading everything that is wrong with this type of machine and the recall and all. They set me up for an appointment for wednesday. The service Tech replaced my machine motor control assembly and it fixed the F1 problem. But now the OL still remains. They check the the pressure transducer to motor control assembly hose and it was fine. Still with problem. they did a water level and presure calibration, and Still Nothing. what is doing is the you turn on the machine on normal with no clothes and water starts to fill up, stops, rotates the tube and recirculate the water. Then it will actually starts fill up but continues and doesnt stop until its full of water then skips the wash and jumps to spin and drains the water until finally beeps and says OL. Please help somebody. the service technician could not figure it out.

I think that assembly is the main Cpu as well, but i could be wrong.I was with the tech through out the re pair and i couldn't see any other boards and Im a electronics tech my self. I forgot to mention that they even replaced the assembly twice thinking that it might have been a faulty control assembly. still nothing they did the service for free with the F1 error service call, but the take gave up after 2 hours and said to reschedule for another service and they'll bring some help to trouble shoot. They said there will be a charge this time since something else wrong with it

  • dnieto82 Oct 08, 2009

It does have a RPM sensor. and no they didn't check the current on the motor. according to them the OL means overloaded.

  • dnieto82 Oct 08, 2009

well actually Yeah. and because the water level should stop at a certain point and continued to fill up all the way, skipped the wash and straight to spin then it would drain the the tub the it will display OL and stop.

  • dnieto82 Oct 08, 2009

I just did an rpm diagnostics and motor and it tested fine. I just recalibrated the water level/presure transducer which is located on the machine/motor control assembly (cpu)

  • dnieto82 Oct 08, 2009

Ok i ran it normal and it did again. then i did the automatic diagnostic C0,C1 which fills tub until it floats and disangages, C2,C3, C4, C5 agitates for about 15 sec. and it wouldnt it would almost turn the whole tub one direction then the other it stoped and OL was displayed and the diagnostic was cancelled. on the service manual it said if there is any problem go to manual motor test and agitation test. Well I did it and the both tested fine. So i went back to automatic test and it worked. Also I was reading one of the post here just now that there is a new updated agitator plate since 2008 cause the agitator plate from o7 and before were balling up the clothes and caused a problem. so i wonder if that is whats causing it since I bought mine back in march 07?

  • dnieto82 Oct 08, 2009

yeah i think is that presure plate too. I dont if there was a service bulletin you think parts are expensive have you serviced the particular model before? what ever it is I really appreciate your help.

the ECU? I see he changed the motor control is all...?? What is the
    model number?

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

Yes that makes more sense that it is the main control and not the motor control unit. So he did change it. I do believe there is a RPM sensor in this machine too. Did they say anything about that? Also, did they use a clamp on meter to look at the motor current?

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

Ya and overloaded means over current! To the motor. The
RPM sensor is crucial to the ECU for motor information too...?? Like speed and direction.

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

What did they think overload means to many shirts in the tub?

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

No, over load is not the level of the tub, it actually means 'over current' pertaining to the current level the motor is experiencing. That's what 'OL' is

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

It may be going into OL (motor over current) due to the extra water weight it's trying to move, that would do it too...

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

The water level is crucial, and I know you said they checked the pressure transducer, right?

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

Here's what it should get with that much water in the tub, Over Flow:

If the Overflow contact on the pressure switch is closed for more than 60
seconds, an Overflow condition will occur. In an Overflow condition, the
Door remains locked and the Drain Pump runs constantly, even if
PAUSE/CANCEL is pressed twice and the Display is cleared. Turn off hot
and cold water faucets and unplug the unit before servicing.

Good, why don't you start it and run it through a check and lets see where it goes haywire?

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

Just run it normal like you're doing a load.

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

See, it goes to OL when it's trying to agitate. That's because of the high motor current. Now were getting somewhere. It could be a transmission too....

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

I really think it's the transmission....

  • Craig Butler
    Craig Butler Oct 08, 2009

Yes, it could also be that plate if there was a bulletin issued on that machine, is that what it was about?

Whirlpool cabrio model 6300sw1 won't aggitate and gives ol code

    It is overload error.
    "oL" (Over Load)
Is the washer overloaded? The washer has attempted to fill •
and begin the wash cycle. If the washer is overloaded, it will
drain any water and detergent that was added during the fill.
To correct the overload, remove several items and add
detergent. Close lid and press START.

Also try to download user manual from this site and check page 19.

    F1 error code

Revolt! If you own a Kenmore Oasis (built by Whirlpool) or Whirlpool Cabrio washer, and you are getting the "F1" error code...or similar codes, and nothing you do fixes the problem...REVOLT!
Three options: Join the class action lawsuit, sign the petition, or be a just another chump consumer. All info is below. I for one, have HAD IT with a 1000.00 washer that breaks after one year.
Here is the class action law suit info. I got
this email a couple of days ago. Remember, these Kenmore Washers (built by Whirlpool) are basically the same machine as the Whirlpool Cabrio:

"Thank you for your interest in pursuing a lawsuit against Sears relating to the Kenmore HE4t and HE3t Washing Machines. This lawsuit is currently being handled by the law firm of Seeger Weiss, LLP. Sheller, P.C. is co-counsel on the case. Your inquiry submission will be forwarded to Seeger Weiss, and you will be contacted by a Seeger Weiss representative shortly."

    Hi Randall:
If your the error reads OL, it's "overloaded" and you need to remove some items to delete this problem.

Definitivelly, this flashes when the machine or motor control detects a load size that exceeds the washer's capacity. To clear the error open the door lid and restart the cycle by removing excess laundry. If error doesn't clears then unplug the washer for 5 at 10 minutes and check.

    Hello & Welcome to FixYa

F1 error in your whirlpool cabrio indicates bad control and should be replaced to resolve the error code. However, you can contact Whirlpool as well prior to replacing the control yourself as I have seen whirlpool paying for the parts themselves just because this is known to be a common issue. Please get back to me if you have any other questions.

Has anyone had success with the whirlpool cabrio after the repair? I'm getting the error F1 and whirlpool agreed to fix it but will I continue to have the issue?

Hi, my Carbio began flashing the F1 error code at 18 months. I have to hit the pause/start 4 or 5 times to get the cycle to begin. It also flashes occasionally at the rinse cycle (17 min.) I have called Whirlpool 3 times with little satisfaction. They have offered to pay for the part, but I will be responsible for the service call, diagnostic fee, and labor. I am not satisfied with this offer. It is obvious to me with so many others experiencing the same problem that Whirlpool has a quality issue with this machine. The sales rep who sold me the machine said to call Whirlpool everyday until they are sick of hearing from me. The more calls logged about the complaint, the better chance of a recall on the machine.

We have started a petition to be sent to the CEO of Whirlpool Corp., Jeff Fettit.
Follow the link, and please sign it! The more the better! Spread the word!
You may also copy and post it to any other groups/discussions about this problem.

Cabrio toploader keeps displaying oL error code even if only a few items.. Been in storage for a few months..

I've been through the F1 and the OL issues. Regarding the F1 error, I had to have a new controller installed after I talked Whirlpool into providing it. Regarding the OL issue, I just purchased a new suspension set (long rods w/ springs suspending the tub from the frame) through Ebay that fixed this problem. The problem is with the suspension springs which weaken over time. The rods and springs are easy to replace once you hinge the machines top up and back. You won't believe the "springy" difference, or lack thereof, between the old "sprung" springs and the new ones. Additionally, the new set includes plastic cups, in lieu of grease, which go on top of the frame to cradle the new rod caps. The suspension spring set I bought off Ebay for my WTW6600S was part number W10189077 for approx $31 w/ shipping. Thank goodness the constant banging and OL error is GONE!
