Re: modems

I would suggest a Belkin Wireless G or Pre-N router, hawkings is also good to use.

I have a rocketfish 1025 va which has worke well and i have been happpy with. but i now have a very strange problem. today i moved it into another room to power my cable modem and router, nothing more....

Well, first let address the lack of power usage from your router and cable modem. The router, depending on model, may only use less than 5 amps of of power, depending on the load it is using at any one time, the cable modem is using maybe 2 amps, at peak load, since the line is already powered from the cable company, there is no real load. Since the usage is much less than 1 watt, it would not register on your meter. The reason why unplugging your devices from the wall, for it to not provide backup power to all of the devices is the battery(ies) may not be providing enough juice to maintain the power required for ll of the devices plugged in. Also, UPS are generally not compatible with power strips and therefore do not tend to function properly with a devices powered on the strip. They generally won't complete the power connection due to the strip carrying a much higher load than the UPS can support. This should explain all of your power issues. If you require additional information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Ethernet card

hi there. The ethernet card is an interface that allows your computer to be connected to a LAN (Local area network) and to a Cable/Dsl modem to be on the internet. The connector looks bigger than the one of a regular telephone jack (it's actually double). If you don't have the ethernet card you can't go on the internet or on a LAN.
From the back of the modem or router you should connect a cable to your ethernet card of yor computer. Only after you did that you can try to connect to the internet.
Let me know, or be more specific.

Modems/operating system

yes the modem is independant of what computer it's on ....... unless in the modem it's self you have set up some of the security features like Mac filtering etc then it would have to be added, but as far as it working with your new computer it should be just fine if it's not let me know and i will assist you in connecting it.
The modem is most likely set up as dhcp so when you connect your new computer it will give it the required setting to connect.

Ethernet cable does not fit into computer

You might be trying to plug the ethernet cable into the modem. This is smaller than the ethernet connectionbut looks the same. If there is no ethernet connection on the computer you might need to have a NIC card install.

Hi i cant connect to internet

I don't know why this is posted in UPS problems, but anyway...
Try two things--the easiest is to turn off (unplug from power) your router and your modem. Let sit a few minutes, turn back on, then see if that has done the trick.

If that doesn't work, you may simply need to go to network and sharing center if you have Vista, click on "connect to a network", and see if your router is found as a wireless connection available to you. If it is, just click on it, and you are in business. If you can't find your router via the windows utilities, (various other things to do are in "help"), you may have to
reconfigure your router setup by resetting your router to its virgin state--usually by pushing a paper clip into the reset hole in the router--usually mentioned in the directions. Then just reconfigure it according to directions, and you are in business.

I.P Adress

your ip is provided by your ISP (internet service provider), if you have two accounts (two modems) then you probably have two ip numbers and if you use one account, even you have ten computers connected to the same modem, will be the same ip but shared.

hope it helps.
