Question about Car Audio & Video

I am replacing the speakers in my 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. The replacement speakers have a positive and a negative, while the speakers that are in the car have plugs: two wires into each side of the speaker. In other words, how do I wire 4 wires to 2? Thanks

What is the purpose of the two positives/two negatives? Crossovers?

  • gsbsessions Oct 08, 2009

I was able to do this in the front, as there were only two terminals but since the amp split the signal into lows and highs for the back speakers, I would have blown the amp. I learned this from the Best Buy stereo installation guy. I paid to have it done, and the two wire speakers would not have worked.

What you have is 2way Speakers < Original so All you do is SPLICE the 2 & 2 together and use the Female Slide on Connecters to connect @ Speakers.
In Other words EXISTING Wires are for 2 way SPKRS thus Having 2 Positives and 2 Negitives you are Splicing Accordingly 2 Positive together and Same for NEGATIVE on BOTH Sides. This will Give the Connections You Need.

I am replacing the speakers in my 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. The replacement speakers have a positive and a negative, while the speakers that are in the car have plugs: two wires into each side of the speaker....

Upgraded audio systems in cars may have different wiring. In my case, I have an EQ, and therefore the manufacturer built the crossover into the amp. One set of wires going to the speaker "carries" the "highs" and goes to the tweeter (which is part of the speaker, not separate.) The other set of wires carries the lows and goes to the woofer part of the speaker. To combine the two wires would have blown the amp. In other words, I needed a component set for my back speakers. Unfortunately, 6x9 is not used as often now, which required the Best Buy Tech to rewire the speaker to separate the signals. I am so grateful for them. I reread my original post which may not have had enough information to answer. The expert was correct for the front speakers, which had two wires going to the positive and two going to the negative.
