Powermac g4 shut down

My powermac g4 just shut down and I can't turn it back on, it smells like something may have burnt. Is there a way to turn it back on or what do I need to do?

I'm not sure what kind of powermac g4 it is but it is both a computer and monitor, it has a circular base with a metal stem and white w/ plastic screen.

Thanks for that :). Do you know what might have caused it to shut off, whether it had been on for too long or overheated or that it just had a failure?

OK it's a G4 iMac.
Burning smells coming from macs often indicate a failure in the power supply module. That said, the G4 iMac (in my experience) has been the most reliable iMac ever and power module failures are very rare.
Your best option is to find a Mac repair centre near you and take in in for a quote. But be warned - it will cost. For some reason known only to Apple power supply modules are expensive (but not as expensive as the equivalent volume of HP ink) and replacing them is not as easy as on many of the other computers.
If it is the power supply, you will not be able to switch it on again. Your data on the HD should be safe (unless the smell was coming from that - - I've had it happen!). So when you get to the workshop and you've had your quote, if you decide not to go ahead with the repair, ask the workshop to remove your HD and put it into an external case so that you can plug it in to another Mac and continue using it.
Let us know what the outcome is.

Pioneer 521 receiver shut off during a movie and then smelled like something burnt, now the receiver will turn on but turns off right away

Burnt smell means a mother board/circuit failure somewhere in the box. There is no owner fix for this. If you open it up you will probably see the charred solder. Back to the dealer

I would like to connect an Apple Studio Display 17" to my Macintosh Server G4. Can it be done? What adaptor is needed if any?

Apple Studio Displays connect via DVI cables. The PowerMac G4 (all versions) support both VGA & DVI. You shouldn't need any adaptors. It should just plug into the back.

99 blazer - driving from Colo to Ia about 4 hours from home when rpms start revving really high - slowed down from 70 to 50 rpms still steady at atleast 3 - 4. Pull over shut off and turn back on then it's...

Unfortunately yes, the torque converter has gone bad, and it is slipping. Increased rpm is due to the lack of friction in the turbine / torque converter, the equivalent of a burned out clutch in a manual transmission. Burnt smell is due to overworked, overheated transmission fluid. Turning off the engine, and letting the fluid cool down, will improve the situation for a few miles, until temp goes up again.

Try replacing the PRAM battery on the motherboard. Radio shack carriers them for about 10 dollars. Start up from CD set clock and choose your hard drive as startup volume and reboot.

Duo Therm 57915.541

Since you have a knob, I am assuming that this unit has manual controls that are mounted directly below the air conditioner on a ceiling pack. If you smell burned wiring, remove the inside shroud to access the 120VAC connections in the unit. Check these connections for OK, if they look burnt, cut them back and reattach them (be sure to turn the breaker off first). Try the AC again.

If those connections look fine, then remove the upper cover from the unit. Access the capacitors on the side of the unit and check them for ok. If any one of them looks burnt, replace it. These two places are usually the only place that you will get a burned plastic smell.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

Do you smell anything burning. This happened to me and I cut it back on. It stayed on for 30 secs or so and did the same thing. After doing this 2-3 times, I smelled a burning. Being a member of the Fire Dept, I didn't want to see my buddy's coming to the house, so I unplugged it. The next day, I took it apart and there was a burnt resistor or something under neath the fan. I took it back and they gave me a new receiver, but I'm expecting the same with this one.

Powermac g4 will not turn

this is a common problem with G4 Quicksilver. Your power-supply is defect and has to be replaced. I have 4 G4s in my lab with the same symptom: a short flash of the power-button light, sometimes it turns on, but mostly the machine is dead.
