If you still have access to the menu options on your LCD then the
problem is probably your Lens iris. Somtimes fixed with a light tap on the side of your camcorder. Gentle tap please. May require lens replacement.

How do I transfer the footage I recorded to PC?

The USB cable is only to download still images recorded on the memory card, using the software that came with the camera. To download video, you need to connect to a computer with a Firewire cable, and have video editing software on your computer to communicate with the camera.

Wont record anything to MiniDV tape and A/D randomly working

Sorry about delayed reply as I just saw it.

Its known problem of ccd imager in Canon ZR85 camcorder and ccd imager needs to be replaced.

Canon will repair your camcorder free of cost as per announced scheme for ccd imager issue.

Click Canon CCD Advisory for details, how to get free repair.

Regarding can't see picture or time code in playback, it is problem of dirty / clogged video heads. Use good quality video head cleaning cassette to clean heads and hope camera will show playback picture.

Good luck.

Moving recording into the computer

You need a USB video capture device. This will connect to the USB port on your computer and will connect to the video and audio out on your camera. These devices come with there own software and its pretty simply to use. I also see that the price has come down on these devices. I bought one a year ago and was around $ 70. Now you can find one for around $ 20. Here is a link which has a bunch of them for sale.

I hope I have been helpful and if you need any help keep posting

Record button doesn't function

You may want to check the record lockout safety switch located on the tape. This button can get moved by accident and the camera will refuse to record on that tape. Also, be sure the camera is in "video" mode, not "photo" mode. Some of Canons camcorders have a digital still camera mode which stops the camcorder from functioning because the photos are being recorded to a memory card and not your tape, please check this swithc as well. Good luck. Joe Weibel
