Question about Sony CPD G420 19" CRT Monitor

1 Answer

I have a Sony G420 CRT monitor which is starting to get too bright. There is a fix for this but in order to carry this out I first need to 'unlock' the control panel on the front of the monitor. For some reason the 'picture effect' button is unresponsive, while depressing the 'menu' button only gives me the manufacturer's date. My initial thought was to look for a firmware upgrade, but as I am on a Mac I am unable to find a suitable installer. Has anybody else struck this issue?

Dear..... to do it set.... you have to open the box with due care as the electricity of the equipment should be turned OFF.... There is a main cable connected with the center of CRT and going onto a section of board called flyback.... is picture can easily been seen on net..... the rotate is anticlock slowly and you will find that brightness of you CRT is getting dimmer.... set is where you want.... actually its screen voltage regulation

SOURCE: Menu pop ups

It will only be one of 2 things, neither easy to correct I am affraid.

  1. The contacts behind the buttons have become faulty and are contacting as if they were being pressed by the buttons on the control panel. To check this is simple (well for me). You will need to open up the monitor and disconnect the front control panels cable. If the pop ups stop, theres your answer. It would then need to have another panel installed.
  2. The internal eeprom has an issue and is detecting that you are pressing the menu buttons and so displaying the menu. This could be a simple case of residue or even lint in the circuit that is giving an incorrect reading that is then translated incorrectly by the eeprom.

SOURCE: sony projection tv convergence issue

You will need two STK392-560 Convergence ICs and you will also need two of the 3.5 amp pico fuses as Sonys will always blow at least two of the Pico fuses. You can get replacement ICs and Pico fuses at the fiollowing link and they provide free instalation instructions. Heres the link.

SOURCE: Front panel buttons and remote have stopped working.

Is the favorite channel menu a function that is normally accessed by a button on the remote?

If so, that button on the remote might be stuck.
If this is the case, the menu may at times pop up all by itself and other buttons on the remote and on the TV's front panel may not respond at all (it had happened on my remotes more than once).

Try to clean the remote control (the housing, rubber pad with knobs, circuit board) with ethyl alcohol, when you clean the housing, you should also clean the holes through which the buttons protrude, there might be some dirt that keeps the button stuck.

It may also be a stuck button on the TV front panel, so check these too.

Also, it could be something else, i just wrote the description of a problem and the solution which to me seemed most likely.

Hope you get it fixed.

Hi, My SONY CPD G420 monitor has suddenly stopped working - the front led is blinking amber. After power cycling the LED stays green for a few seconds before going back to blinking amber. I have verified...

just unplug the signal cable and see if it shows a warning! if it shows then the monitor is in some working condition! this problem mainly is not the monitors problem its the systems problem, it seem as if the system is in standby when u on it right??? it happens when the processor doesn't get supply or it refuses to come on! you will see that the red hdd load led will not light when u start the CPU; just open the CPU and unplug the smps from the board and blow the pins to clean them up and re-fix it and see it will work. if still it doesn't work try some other smps it will work! reply and revert back for more help with a vote!

A 15-inch CRT monitor? It's time to responsibly recycle it, and buy a 17-inch LCD monitor, because _nobody_ fixes CRT monitors any more.

Standby problem HMDA400 CRT Sony doing the same need to discharge the CRT of static, then open the case and vacume the boards, heat sinks and every thing soldered down, strap grounds and the glass tube CRT.

Then run the self diognostic from the manual ..its simple and will tell you if the problem is major...usually it is a pwr the pwr strip outlet may be shorting or pulsing erratical out put....bad strip......if the self diognostic shows the monitor is thing to do is replace the main monitor PC board to avoid testing other componants with speciality equpment you don't have! Last resort replace the CRT...the most expensive piece of the the picture tube it self...

try a good known monitor on your system to be sure you don't have a software, or CPU problem or pwr glitch.....know this ,a black screen with no raster(lines, visuals) could be a sign of a faulty FBT(fly back transformer) happens with CRT doesn't it...and you would be advised to" wear rubber gloves" to replace the FBT yourself....because of the dangerous voltage stored in the damn things.....its the current not the voltage that is deadly.....two hands on any circuit is not hand at a time when taking parts out and putting them in.....get rid of rings watches and other conductive bling on your wrists and hands! will thank you me for that! good luck!

Is there still power to the monitor or is the screen just black? Do you hear any sort of sound when it goes black? Does the time the picture goes out vary or does it happen after say "X" minutes/hours everytime? Do you have any power saving software activated that would cause the monitor blank out? Check display properties? Sounds weird but have you checked for any viruses or spyrus nasties? If its hardware it could be many different things. Let me know what happens. Good Luck Tim
