Soot?
i would have to ask if you using naturasl gas or lp from a bottle
soot is usually from the heater if your set up for the wrong gas you dont get a clean burn and soot is deposited in the dryer

Amana electric dryer timer doesn't advance during

If this is one of the electronic models: Clean the sensor strips located inside the drying area. As wet clothes rub against these the control monitors the resistance changes and knows the clothes are still wet therefore it continues to operate. When buildup from dryer sheets and fab softener get on them strips a barrier is formed that repels dampness. Therefore the control does not know the clothes are wet and goes to the end thinking all is Kosher. Clean them sensor strips with Windex and party on!

Amana dryer does not heat sufficiently

The problem is the dryer coils are failing. They tend to fail as they heat up. They are inexpensive and easy to replace. Here is a link that should help http://appliancehelponline.com/gdryertroublevideo.html

My dryer will heat up, but it is not drying the clothes during the cycle. It takes 2 or 2.5 cycles to dry the load

if you have the top model lint filter take it out put your hand in and see if you have good air sucken,if not you have a clogg somewhere in the dryer hose or wall vent, most of the time it is the wall vent, if the hot wet air can't get out the cloths will take forever to dry-mike

Sounds like you may not be exhausting properly.

Be sure you are getting good air flow at the end of the exhaust.
If not, make sure the screen is clean.
Be sure the vent tube is not clogged is clear.
Possibles take off the back and see if sxhaust is clear.

Gas dryer continues to run on the Auto cycle.

try to get the manual for the dryer you got and locate the moisture sensor if this sensor is bad what happen is that the automatic timer thinks that the clothes still wet and continues to dry once the sensor detects no moisture then it shut off the dryer normally is located behind the dryer on the exit line of the air duct and tested for conductivity and see if is good or not
