Maytag MSD2356AEW refrigerator freezing up

About 5 years ago the coil on my Maytag MSD2356AEW refrigerator was freezing up & I was told I needed a defrost board. I have been manually defrosting it with a hair dryer about once a year since. But in the past 3 months it has gotten very frequent & now it pretty much won't last more than a week. I think there are more issues now, like refrigerant or another part. I don't want to just start replacing parts though & I can't really afford a tech right now. What can I do or check?

Sorry. No we did not actually replace the board. So it obviously still needs to be done. I'm just thinking there is more to it than that now.

You did not clarify , if the board was changed or not . You only have 2 parts to the defrost system , as the defrost heater AND bimetal , come togather . I would start with the heater/bimetal part first .
Pt number 61006198 Heater and bimetal
Pt number 61005988 Adaptive defrost board

The bimetal , is the 1" cylinder , clipped to the top of the coils , and heater , at the bottom of the coils .

If you manually defrosted only once a year , then that couldn't have been the problem in the first place . A refrig has to defrost at least once or twice a day or the evaporator will frost up , causing non- cooling in the refrig section . Minimum of once every 2 days . So , if you defrosted only 1 time a year , then , either one of the parts could be bad now .

there is a flap in the refrigerator side usually near or behind the light bulb the freezer side is thermostatically controlled with the compressor being controlled. On the refrigerator side the cold air comes from the freezer side. when this flap is open the refrigerator will cool continuously, Check the flap or the duct assembly
here is an illustration of the part

I have this same refrigerator, also purchased in 2006. Same exact problem. Fridge freezes, starting actually in the water line, you will notice water on door does not work, then top two shelves start to freeze. Lasts for a few days, then prob does not happen again for 6 months almost to the day. I've had this problem for almost 3 years!!! My service tech said to buy another, glitch in this system he can't figure out. Replaced damper x2, control board, and thermostat x2. Not sure what else to do. I hate the thought of more food lost to spoilage!

Do a manual defrost overnight by unplugging and leaving the doors open the opening should not be frozen. Alot of humidity or constantly opening the door sometimes causes the frostup.

there are two water inlet valves on the back of refrigerator, one for icemaker the other for water in door. the valve for the water inlet is plugged or the soelinoid coil is bad. replace faulty valve, usually about 20 to 30 greenbacks at the appliance parts store

Side by Side Maytag Frig/Freezer Frig not cooling

Hello momeddy41,
I'm Huuum to your rescue.

Is your freezer packed to the top, and covering any air ducts near the back of the freezer?
The freezer and fridge share the air and if the circulation from the freezer to the fridge is cut off ,
this could cause problems.
Or you may just need a shot of coolant to raise the pressure in the coil.
It's not necessarily wise to spend a lot of money on an old fridge over 7 years old.
But*** it's better to try one service call and find out if it is one of the many simple things first, as I showed you. Then you would ne saving the price of a new fridge for awhile!
That's your call.

Here is an interesting report I just read!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to help!

Bless You, Thank You, HUUUM
