Question about Compaq Computers & Internet
I have a hp compaq presario 4410us. It only starts up when I connect the power cord and then turns off after about 5 sec. The computer will not start or turn off with the front panel power on push button. Again it will only start if I unplug and replug the power cable and then turns off. I thank you and appriciate that I can ask for your help. I hope you can help us!
If the machine is still under warranty, have HP do the deed; If not, it would appear from your description that your power supply is toast. You can pick one up from any neighbourhood computer store for $15 and up, and if you're even half-handy with a screwdriver you can replace this part in about 10 minutes.
Just make sure you get a supply that's putting out enough power to run your machine reliably; For your machine a 250 watt supply is the minimum required. Going to a higher-output supply is not an issue, but anything lower than 250w will cause your machine to not function.
A sidenote: Using your front panel power button to shut down your machine will probably work fine after your replace the power supply- Most computer BIOS settings are set so that you have to press and hold the power button for 5 seconds before it'll shut down.

As for it powering off after about 5 seconds could be caused by a couple of things
IF THE COMPUTER PASSES a POST test (BIOS, computer should beep once) check the following, if it does not POST (gets past BIOS) its almost assuredly the motherboard that has failed
1. Make sure there is not a build up of dust and dirt inside the tower. (To clean use canned air or a vacuum specially designed for computers(Anti-Static) don't use a regular household vacuum, this will ruin your computer 2. A failing CPU fan can cause a computer to power off on its own. Have your case open and watch the fan if its not spinning its probably bad and needs to be replaced (Costs about $10), you could also try and reset the fan cable(unplug and plug back in) 3.Examine your power switch on the front, see if it is getting stuck when you press it in. If it is you could try and remove and clean, their not really meant to be repaired but you might be able to jimmy rig it to work. If you suspect the power switch to be getting stuck you could follow the cable from the switch unplug it and touch a screw driver to just those two pins, this will power on your PC. (****NOTE***** I am not liable if you accidentally connect more than the 2 pins together SO BE CAREFUL IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS)
IF you have tried all above steps, then you probably need to have the PSU(power supply) replaced about $50
