drain tube is frozen. you can unplug refrigerator overnight to thaw it out. place towels around refrigerator to protect your floor and prevent water all over kitchen. Turn your thermostat down in refrigerator 1/2 number. That is the least expensive way of repairing your issue.

  • Ruidawg Jun 23, 2012

This is a common problem for many refrigerators.. On Whirlpool and Frigidaire refrigerators you can actually purchase an ("off-the-market" drain tube heater) to install onto the defrost heater behind the freezer panel.

Your freezer has a drain that leads to the exterior drain pan beneath the unit. Occasionally this drain can become clogged resulting in standing water inside your freezer, due to line freeze over. In the freezer, standing water will become ice and may result in defrost problems or inadequate coldness.

You will need to Clear the drain by forcing a solution of water and bleach or water and baking soda into the drain line with a basting syringe. If the solution will not flow through, slide a length of ¼ inch flexible tubing into the drain tube to push the clog through to the drain pan. Remove the tubing after clearing the clog. This will correct the issue.

NO, this model is quite the performer. There are no complaints at this time. The only reason for the dumping of water inside the freezer is a clogged drain or drain funnel. I would seriously check the drainage system for clogs, or obstructions. The line will only freeze, or build up ice, if there is a slow drain. Use the procedure to flush the drain.

Since you didn't give a model number, I don't know if it is frost free or not. If it is, then you have a problem with you defrost system: defrost heater, thermostat or defrost timer.

It also sounds like your door seal is not making solid contact and most air is leaking into the freezer.

If your unit is a frost free, then water should drain down and out.

Icing up

I've just had a similar problem. I fixed it by removing the large panel on the back of the inside of the freezer. I found a large build up of ice at the bottom of the freezer which seems to have developed because the drain hole at the bottom of the freezer was blocked. I defrosted the ice, cleared the drain and now the freezer is working fine.

Ice in bottom of frost free whirlpool freezer

Most likely the drain (located behind the lower panel rear wall) is obstructed. You will want to clear out the ice build up and use a turkey baster with hot water to clear the frozen drain tube.

Freezer model EV171NYMS04 we have ice build up on

There is a drain the back of the freezer that is frozen. Your trickle of water comes from the ice that melts off of the refrigeration coils during the defrost cycle. You need to turn off the freezer, then remove the rear cover from the back wall to expose the coils. With a hair dryer, melt all of the ice. You will find a drain under the coils. Melts all of the ice in this drain so water can get out of the freezer. When this drain is clear, you can put everything back together, and your freezer should work normally.

Ice maker icing up

Sounds like you may have a couple of problems here. The frost build up could be from a bad door seal. Moist air can be drawn in and collect on the inside. As for the water temp, it sounds like the water line connected to the refrigerator could be tapped off a hot water line. It needs to be connected to a potible cold water line.

Is the frost build-up in my freezer normal? Why do I have ice in forming the the bottom of my frost free freezer?

The drain has most likely frozen over. It is at the bottom behind the back panel inside the freezer. You will need to remove all of the ice and run hot water down the drain until it is clear.

Ice build up in my frost free upright freezer

I looked at the BACK at the bottom underneath of my Sears Kenmore frost free upright freezer and what was causing the ice buildup was very simple. At the factory, the assembler looped the little hose too high and when the water went into the hose it could not get out due to being too high in one spot! An ice dam will form, blocking ALL water coming through
and freezing up any more water coming down giving you a HUGE wad of ice that is scary!!! I just removed the screw holding the loop that holds the hose and put a bit of warm water down the little hole on the INSIDE (Behind the grate) to melt the remaining ice in the tube. You need to take out 4 screws and remove the grate to see this. I could not believe that this was the problem! I haven't had any ice build up since. Now don't tear your freezer apart before you try this trying to fix the compressor, thermostat etc. It may be the only thing wrong with it!
