Question about Bernina Sewing Machines

1 Answer

Viewer states problem - but cannot correct.

I have a Bernina Artista 730. Very few inches of sewing/embroidery the viewer states "Please check lower area of lint or stray thread. If bobbin is emply, please rewind bobbin." I have done this so many times and nothing different happens. I have taken it to a Bernina dealer twice and has not been fixed. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I bought my wife an Artista 730E to replace her 180E, and she was getting the same message on the 730 as noted above. I cleaned the bobbin, but it still came up with the same message. I ask her if you're using ONLY the 730 bobbin. She said she's using her 180 embroidery bobbin because of the pigtail. Looking at the picture of the bobbin on the display of the machine, I noticed it had a **** on the bottom of the bobbin for the senor eye to look through. Her 180 bobbin is solid metal on the bottom. I said to use only the 730 bobbins. She used the bobbin with pigtail that came with the 730, and Presto, IT WORKS. Moral of story, Don't Mix Old with the New thinking that it's all the same. It's not! I'm and electronics design engineer, so even though I know very little about sewing machines, I know electronics. The 730 sensor eye needs to see the Movement of the bobbin through the hole on the bottom. The 180 looks at the hole in the top of the bobbin.

Hi, if you look in the bobbincase you will see a round spring. Sometimes this gets moved and it blocks the hole the sensor reads through. Clean inside the bobbincase with a q-tip. Also clean the sensor lens on the door with a q-tip. Also try rewinding a bobbin but don't start with the thread through a hole in the bobbin.
Hope this helps.

use a bigger eye in the needle and loosen of the needle thread tension a bit
needles are all the same length but come with various size eyes to accommodate thicker or thinner threads
use scrap material until you get a good combination

With embroidery card inserted into module, no motifs appear on the display screen.

Here are two other possibilities other than electrical problems with your Bernina. There are embroidery design cards that were made for the 200 & 730 that simply do not work in a 180. There is nothing marked on the card or the packaging that will tell you what model machine the card will work in. I sold a bunch of my design cards on eBay last winter and I tested all of them in both a 730 and a 180 before making the ad discription. I found that most of the design cards worked in the 180 & 730, but there were a few that only worked in the 730. So if your design card is one of those that won't work in a 180, that could be your problem.
You did not say if you have other design cards that do work or there is only one you tried. Possibly the card itself is bad.
A static shock to the card could possibly damage it.
So if you take your machine to a dealer to have it looked at, take your design card along.
The 180's memory for storing designs is located in the embroidery module, not the machine itself. If that memory is filled up with other designs this can cause a problem.
So your problem is most likely with the design card or with the embroidery module. Should you need to get another embroidery module, that module needs to be the same version number as your machine or it will not work. I have a. video posted on YouTube that shows you how to check the version number of your machine and module. That information is in my "Bernina check hours 165, 170, 180, 185" video. Put that in the YouTube search box and you will find my video. Plus I have other helpful Bernina videos posted.

If you bought the embroidery unit with the machine, I would try to take it back to the place of purchase & ask for a sewing tech to check the machine & unit for you.
I recently had a similar issue with my machine-took it to a local bernina agent & within a week, it was back in my sewing room, at no cost to me. I hope this helps you, & yes I have a 180 with the embroidery unit like you mentioned

I know this is a long-overdue response, but maybe it will help someone else. I had the same problem, and it turned out that the cause was that my bobbins had oxidized. Rubbing them with a bit of steel wool or fine-grain sandpaper did the trick, and I was up and running again.
