Repair motherboard I purchased a dead Sony Vaio FX705 for spares but would like a go at trying to restore it. No lights at all when powered up. There must be some protection for the motherboard in a form of a fuse etc, but cannot fine one. What elese can I try to try and restore power to the motherbaord. Thanks Andrew

Nowadays, fuses aren't just cylinders of glass and metal. They also come as white rectangular cubes. If the board has designators, look for F1, F2, etc, and those would be fuses.

My sony vaio vgn-cr120e won't turn on. The adapter is working.

Perform power cycle. Disconnect all power sources, battery and power cord. Press power button for 5 secs. Reconnect power and start unit again. Do you see VAIO? Do you enter BIOS by holding F2 as soon as you press power button? If not then its probably hardware related, i mean needs service. Otherwise if you see any of what i mentioned above try turning off and then on and pressing F8 for safe mode or repair your computer options and then try system restore from accessories menu or F10 for full recovery with data loss (Restore C drive)

My laptop would not start, even after pressing start button please help

Make sure your power cord is working, You may need to purchase a replacement power supply for it or use a spare. If this still does not work, you can try removing the battery, unplug the laptop and then hold down the power button for 30 seconds to relase any power that may be locking it up - shot in the dark, but worth a try.
Unfortunately, if it isn't the power supply, either the power jack is damaged and needs to be replaced by a professional or you need to replace the motherboard. If it is an old laptop think about whether or not its worth it to sink the money into it ... you can have the geek squad or local computer guy move the data to a new computer, this does NOT mean that your hard drive is dead.

Can't restore factory intallations and settings: Vaio VGN-FE880E

Are you doing DESTRUCTIVE recoveries or are you doing NONDESTRUCTIVE recoveries? Try another hard drive in the machine and recover to that. Nondestructive recoveries replace the operating system without destroying the personal data. Its possible the original problem is propagating over to the recovered systems. Do a destructive recovery. Understand any data not backed up will be destroyed. Possible the original problem was a trojan virus.

Sony vaio desktop wont turn on

This type scenario normally indicates a power supply failure. Try connecting a known good power supply to your Sony Vaio desktop.

If you do not have a spare power supply, (many people do not) the alternative is to short the the black and green wire on the power lead connecting to the motherboard using a paper clip. This is not a desirable solution and very dangerous, but will help to diagnose the problem. Do not insert any objects while the power supply is energized. Ensure it is unplugged first.

Should the computer start with the green and black wire shorted, the problem is with the power supply. If not, the problem is likely at the motherboard level.

Hope this helps you.

Vaio will not turm on

you will most likely need to replace the dc jack, which is the port where your charger plug plugs into...

To test if your dc jack is bad... Remove the Battery, Plug the Power cord into laptop then attempt to power on... If no lights turn on, no fan spins.. your DC jack is bad...
DC Jacks Cost $6 to $10 but you need to find someone experienced to replace it, or you might end up with a dead motherboard as well..

Vaio fx705 Boot failure

Usually 1 long and 2 short is a problem with the video card and/or video memory. Assuming it is not onboard video, replacing the video card should fix the problem.
