Repair motherboard I purchased a dead Sony Vaio FX705 for spares but would like a go at trying to restore it. No lights at all when powered up. There must be some protection for the motherboard in a form of a fuse etc, but cannot fine one. What elese can I try to try and restore power to the motherbaord. Thanks Andrew

Re: Repair motherboard

Nowadays, fuses aren't just cylinders of glass and metal. They also come as white rectangular cubes. If the board has designators, look for F1, F2, etc, and those would be fuses.

My sony vaio vgn-cr120e won't turn on. The adapter is working.

Perform power cycle. Disconnect all power sources, battery and power cord. Press power button for 5 secs. Reconnect power and start unit again. Do you see VAIO? Do you enter BIOS by holding F2 as soon as you press power button? If not then its probably hardware related, i mean needs service. Otherwise if you see any of what i mentioned above try turning off and then on and pressing F8 for safe mode or repair your computer options and then try system restore from accessories menu or F10 for full recovery with data loss (Restore C drive)

Power socket sony vaio

Look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard.
This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

No power to Vaio PCG-F590 PC notebook

Try two things:
1) If you unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery and push the power button for a few seconds it will reset. Then reconnect everything and try turning the computer back on.
2) If (1) does not work then try purchasing a universal adapter from a local store, such as Best Buy, to test if that is the problem.

If neither of those things work then you have a bad motherboard. Replacing the motherboard would likely exceed the value of the unit.

Can't restore factory intallations and settings: Vaio VGN-FE880E

Are you doing DESTRUCTIVE recoveries or are you doing NONDESTRUCTIVE recoveries? Try another hard drive in the machine and recover to that. Nondestructive recoveries replace the operating system without destroying the personal data. Its possible the original problem is propagating over to the recovered systems. Do a destructive recovery. Understand any data not backed up will be destroyed. Possible the original problem was a trojan virus.

Vaio will not turm on

you will most likely need to replace the dc jack, which is the port where your charger plug plugs into...

To test if your dc jack is bad... Remove the Battery, Plug the Power cord into laptop then attempt to power on... If no lights turn on, no fan spins.. your DC jack is bad...
DC Jacks Cost $6 to $10 but you need to find someone experienced to replace it, or you might end up with a dead motherboard as well..

Sony Vaio ac adapter submerged

If the ac adapter was plugged into the laptop at the time may be bad news. Unplug AC adapter, take out the battery and hold power button for 10 seconds. Then connect AC adapter and hit power. If that doesn't work put battery back in without ac adapter and hit power button.

If neither test works bring to repair center for diagnosis. Best case AC adapter would need replacing. Worst case Motherboard fried.
