The screen is broken. If it's not under warranty Google "iPod repairs" in your country and they might be able to replace it. Otherwise you can get an exchange unit from Apple. Take it to your nearest Authorised Apple Service Centre and they will get it exchanged in a couple of days. Unfortunately this might cost almost as much as a new one.

What do you do when there is a black screen on your ipod

Does it have a green line in middle of screen ??

Apple has some suggestions to try before taking it in to an Apple store. Most iPod Nanos are covered by a one year warranty, and you may have purchased a longer warranty. For questions about your warranty and coverage, call Apple customer service. If your iPod is still covered and you live near an Apple store, it may be faster to take it in.

Charge the iPod Nano for several hours to make sure the problem isn't a low battery. Force reset the iPod Nano by holding down the Sleep button and the volume down button at the same time for 8-10 seconds or until the Apple logo appears. Restore your iPod Nano by plugging it into iTunes and clicking on the iPod, then "Restore." This will wipe all information on your iPod Nano and install the latest version of its operating system. Re-sync your data to the iPod Nano after a restore.
