FIRST TRY FAST FORWARD AND THEN REWIND. Allow it to ff and rew right to the end of the tape. on the tape. do this a couple of times. this may cure it as it sounds like the tapes are getting an imbalanced tension. If you still haver the problem, dip a cotton bud in alcohol and clean (carefully) the pinch wheel (the rubber bit that drives the tape through) and the capstan (the metal bit the rubber wheel presses against).

Auto reverse

You do not list brand and model but it is typical that the belt replacement is missing the mark in that the reel rotation sensor is not detecting rotation of the reel table and therefore trying to go the other way. The reels have to be turning in play mode. If they do not auto stop or the reverse function thinks the tape is at end.

Music playing backwards

Well, not being there to try some diagnostics, there can be a number of reason that the tape plays backwards at times. One reason is that the tapes are 4 channel discrete tape requiring a 4 track 4 channel deck- this would mean track 2,4 are recorded in the forward direction. A Stereo (2 channel 4 track deck) play tracks 2,4 in the opposite direction. That is why you turn the tape over on some decks. Other possibilities could be tape path skew, that reverse relay is NOT changing the head that "listens: to the tape and that is just the start of what it could be. When a new person starts to use a deck of such age- it can be correct to assume that the deck is not working in some respect. A Tape deck Technician such as myself would know how to determine if the deck was working correct or not and know and have parts to correct it. I worked in the Factory Service in Chicago for Teac and actually have one coming into my shop in the near future. After 40 years of working on these I am still at it. I am sorry there may not be an easy answer to this.

I have an rca portable radio tape and cd player RCD175, and it plays good, but wont play cassette tapes. I put the tape in and press pas and the play button wont stay pressed in. What causes that?

Hello
It is due the mechanism trouble to your set. The casette tape deck mechanism should be troubleshooted. It is a skilled work. Just contact any experienced service technician to make this set right.

Deck plays forward, fast forward and fast reverse O.K., but does not play backwards.

I don't have any quick answers as this is a newer deck than when I worked for the company- I would have to see the deck to determine the fault. Do you have the continuous reverse switch on -maybe that is it.

How do I dub casette to casette? I lost the manual.

There should be a DUB button. After you push the DUB button, you will have another button that will allow you to select Dub form 1-2 or 2-1. If not there will only be one deck that will play while the other records and plays. Put the tape to be coppied in the play deck and the blank tape in the record deck push record and it should work.

You can press play and pause, but then you can't press down rec. help.

Is the erasure prevention tab missing from a commercial or previously recorded cassette? It would leave a little (about 1/8" square) hole in the spine edge of the cassette shell. That tab is there to prevent accidental erasure by allowing a small sensor lever to drop in and mechanically disable the recording mechanism. Compare a commercial cassette with a brand new blank one. You can place a piece of adhesive tape on the casette to allow recording, but take care to NOT cover more than the first 1/8" of the opening if it is larger as the recorder also senses tape type by the length of the hole molded into the cassette.
Word to the wise - don't scrimp on the tape if the recording matters to you. Spend a bit extra for better tapes. Store the tapes 'played', avoid fast forwarding and rewinding unless you'll be playing them through to wrap the tape uniformly before storing it INSIDE its tape box. Read the other warnings that come with the media. No heat, moisture, dust, blah-blah.

It will be one of the drive belts , its better to get a repair shop to replace both belts , i have tried replacing belts myself and they are fiddly and time consuming , if you keep playing it the way it is you will damage the motors that turn the belts
