Question about HP Photosmart 3310 Printer

I am trying to scan and get the error message 'the scan cannot be performed because another program or computer is using the neworked device" Can you help?

    unfortunately, none of the suggestions worked for me. do u have any other ideas?

Just make sure that all other programs that your not using at the time your trying to scan is closed out of at the time. Also if your connected to a network, tempearly take yourself off line by unhooking the network cable from the back of your comptuer.

This will trouble shoot if the problem is coming from an other comptuer on your network. if you have multiple computes at your house. or officer or what ever you have.

if this dont work, uninstall your printer by going to our control panel under my computer and go to add or remove harware. then reinstall your pritner this might help also

Solution one: Make sure that the hardware functions correctlyUse the product to copy a document. If the copy function does not work, search for a document that covers the copy error message. If there is no error message, or the issue persists, continue to the next solution. Solution two: Restart the router, All-in-One, and computer

  1. Press the Power button (I am trying to scan - c01602202.gif ) to turn off the product.
  2. Turn off the computer.
  3. Turn off the network router, if your product is connected to one.
  4. Turn on the router.
  5. Press the Power button (c01602202.gif ) to turn on the product.
  6. Turn on the computer.
  7. Try scanning again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Check the network connectionDepending on whether your network connection is wired or wireless, use one of the following options to manually check the network connection. Option one: The All-in-One is connected to a wired network (Ethernet)
  1. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the rear of the product.
  2. Inspect the Ethernet cable to make sure it is the correct type of cable and is not visibly damaged.
  3. Plug the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port (c01514361.gif ) in the rear of the product.
  4. Make sure the light on the Ethernet port is on.
Option two: The All-in-One is connected to a wireless network
  1. Make sure that the access point or computer to which your HP product is connected is powered on.
  2. Move the HP product closer to the access point or computer.

  4. Press 7 to open the Network menu.
  5. Press 4 to run the Wireless Setup Wizard.
  6. Type your service set identifier (SSID), the name assigned to a wireless Wi-Fi network. The SSID is case-sensitive.
  7. Specify the correct mode or security type.
  8. If the network uses media access control (MAC) address-filtering, make sure that the access point is set to allow the MAC address of the HP product.


  9. Type the correct wired equivalent policy (WEP) key. The WEP key is stored within the access point. Find the WEP key by logging on the access point through the computer. If the WEP uses 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters, use characters 0-9 and A-F.
  10. Type the correct Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) passphrase (between 8 and 63 characters).


  11. Make sure that the network is configured with an authentication protocol that the installation software supports.Supported protocols include WEP (64 bit and 128 bit) and WPA-PSK (WPA1 or WPA2, AES or TKIP). Ad-Hoc supports WEP encryption only.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
  • Solution five: Disable firewalls and try scanning againFollow these steps to disable any firewall, and then try scanning again. Step one: Disable Windows firewall
    1. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router, modem, or gateway.
      NOTE: If you are unsure where the router, modem, or gateway is, consult your system administrator.
    2. Click Start , and then click Control Panel . The Control Panel opens in a new window.
    3. Double-click (c01514363.gif ). Windows Security Center opens in a new window.
    4. Windows Firewall (c01520244.gif ). The Windows Firewall Settings dialog box opens.
    5. FrI am trying to scan - c01514364.giferal tab, select Off (not recommended) (c01514364.gif ), and then click OK .
    Step two: Disable third party firewalls
  • Make sure the Ethernet cable is disconnected from the router, modem, or gateway.
  • Look in the lower-right corner of the computer (notification area) to find the icon representing the third-party software.

have you tried to reinstall the software, first uninstall it from add or remove programs and then resintall it from the cd or we can get them from the internet.

This problem is related to Firewall settings. If I guess right, you've installed the Outpost Firewall with the Hp Software. Look at the right-side of the taskbar, you'll see a light-blue icon of Outpost Firewall. Right-click the icon and select "Disable". Now, open "My Computer" > double-click C:\ drive > Program Files > Agnitum > Outpost Firewall > locate and open "machine.ini" > Notepad will open up, now locate the line in the notepad text "EnableContentHandler=True", now replace the "True" with "False", and save the file.
Now re-enable the Outpost Firewall from the Taskbar. You'll be able to scan now.

Scanner not working


Hi Jkey !

As per the information you have provided, I understand that you are receiving an error "No scan option refer to the documentation" on the printer, when you try to print from the front panel of the printer (I mean from the printer's side).

However, plz provide me the proper error message so that I can assist you in the best possible way. If you are unable to scan from the printer's side, then try to scan from the computer and check if it is working or not. It should work when you try to scan from the computer, if not there may be a communication issue between the two devices.

To check the communication perform the below steps:

IF the printer is connected via USB cable, then perform below steps:

To isolate the issue I suggest you to try scanning from the Windows Image acquisition(WIA) wizard on the computer.

Follow the below steps to Scan using WIA
1.Verify that the all-in-one product power is turned on and the printer cable is properly connected.

2.Click Start then Click All Programs then Click Accessories then Click Scanner and Camera Wizard.

3.Follow the Scanner and Camera Wizard instructions to scan images to the computer.

If you are able to scan fine using the above steps, please write back to me along with the exact error message.

Error messages appear when scanning from glass to macbook.


Hi there,
  • Unplug the Scanner cable from the computer.
  • Unistall the Scanner drivers from Device manager and also unistall the all the Scanner appications
  • restart the computer
  • try to download drivers from the website
  • after installing drivers and software it will ask you to connect the Scanner.
  • then you can connect the Scanner and and try to Scan.

I have a c4830 and i am unable to get it to scan to my laptop i am getting an error message which reads ( the scan cannot be performed because another program or computer is using the networked HP imaging...


Your firewall is blocking the printer from doing it scanning. Try to turn off your firewall or try to add an exceptions in your firewall for the printer software

Scanning error


I'm not sure if this is the cause every time it happens, but if there are no other programs running, and it's still coming back with the same error, try deleting the printer *NOT UNINSTALLING THE SOFTWARE* and then adding it again.
Generally if the printer stalls while performing some task, it continues to think that it's still doing whatever it was trying to do. Deleting it and adding it again should get rid of whatever program was using it.

Error message


What is your operating system?

If XP, check your device manager to see if the scanner is being recognized by XP.

What is your scanning software?
Try to use another scan program ( a free demo version should work fine.)

Are you using TWAIN or an ISIS driver? If it is a TWAIN driver, then any Photo editing program should be able to connect ( usuallly!?).
