This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

See the following description of how to remove the cabinet on top load, direct drive washers.

My washer will not spin in any cycle

you have a defective lid safety switch it is normally under the lid, lift up the lid and look for a tab sticking down from the lid that goes through the top cover, this is the piece that triggers this switch

Kenmore top load washer, it washes but won't rinse or spin, I tried to lift the top off to check the lid switch becuse the lever pad is stuck down, but how do the tops lift off

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part.

The codes are called error codes. They indicate a malfunction with some process with the washer program. There is a tech sheet inside the washer that explains all these codes and how to troubleshoot them. If this is a Cabrio, the tech sheet is affixed to the inside of the washer on the front panel in between the front and the wash tub. You will need to lift the washer top panel or reach up behind the front panel from underneath the washer to access it.

If you wish to lift the top panel, you will need to insert a putty knife in the seam where the top panel meets the front. About two inches in from each side is a retaining clip that you must push in on while lifting up. Release each side and the entire panel lifts up. Make sure you hold the lid closed while doing so, or it will fly open when you lift the top up. A good idea is to tape the lid shut if you want to open the top.

If you wish to reach up from underneath the washer, use the assistance of a sencond person to tilt the washer back. Its not recommended to attempt this on your own.

If you have any questions about any of the error codes you are experiencing, or if your model number is different, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

it sounds like the lid switch is going out if you lift the top of the washer you will see it in there this is a safety feature for homes with small children if your kids are all grown and gone you can connect the two wires going to that switch to bypass it otherwise any appliance parts store will have these switches in stock they are usually around $15

How does the top come off ge washer model wjxr2080t6ww

Use a putty knife to push the spring clips in where the top of the front panel meets the washer top, about 2 or 3 inches in from each side. Front panel pulls forward and lifts off pegs, revealing two 1/4 inch drive hex screws holding top to side panels. If your washer has the lid switch near the front, push the tab on the back side toward the center of the switch and push switch up, then twist 90 degrees and pass switch back through the opening. Now lift washer top at the front side. Most washer tops will unhook from the back side now, but some need to be slid an inch to the side yet to remove once the top is lifted a few inches. If you model still has the lid switch near the back of the washer opening, lift the top at the front and unhook the back of the washer top, pull the top forward a few inches and unplug the lid switch disconnect block. (two wires)

Whirlpool AWZ412 wont spin seems to do everything else have tried with an empty machine but still no spin

The first thing to fail on a washer is the lid safety switch. It's right under the top, a little tab on the lid pushes it. Lift the top, check the switch. To test it: temporarily connect the two wires to it together. If the machine spins, replace the switch.
