Plugged the tv in, red power light comes on. I pressed the power button immediately and it went off and nothing happened, no sound, pic or power button light. I unplugged it for a few minutes and plugged it back up but waited for a few minutes and then pressed the power button. This time the red light turned blue and i got the "hissing" noise that sounds like its coming from the top or the back, somewhere in that area.
I've read most of the posts on issues similar to this and some say power supply while others say capacitors or main boards. Before i take start monkeying around with it, i'm assuming i should look for swollen capacitors first?? I had a similiar issue with swollen capitors that needed replaced on a dvd player years ago so i can identify those but just wanting to know if thats the best/first place i should look as my time is a bit limited right now. Thanks in Advance!!
Power supply capacitors are the most likely culprit. Look for bad solder connections as well.
No, it's not typically that easy on most TVs. For example on a Phillips 37" HDTV, it takes a lot of work. You have to take the base off, the entire rear cover, and then the main board and power supply are in a steel box that is screwed down to the unit. You need to free up several ribbon cables and unscrew the box, and you can see the main board and psu board. The main board has a huge heat sink bolted to it,which must be unscrewed for access.

I have no users manual (this is actually my uncles tv) but i assume it's easy to access just under the panel on the back? I know sometimes you'll have to remove several parts/brackets etc, to get to the main board..
