Check the hook for burrs, nicks or rough spots. If you find any, they need to be removed with a sharpening stone or emery stick. Buff it with a fine emery cloth until it is smooth .
Check the needle. The long grove goes to the left.

Make sure you are threading the machine correctly and it has the proper tension. Also check the bobbin the thread has to go thru the little lash

SOURCE: Very inexperienced sewer! How do I thread it?

The way I solved this problem was to take a break! When I resumed I was more patient and found that I wasn't doing the bobbin right. I took my time and got it right this time....hooray!

It needs some adjustments that are covered by the warranty. Bring it to the pros.

If you try to fix it yourself, the warranty will be void.

I have a brother xl 5500 it keeps breaking the top thread no matter what i do

Go back to your instruction manual, some available online. to Re-thread the machine completely and make sure you are threading correctly. If that's not it, you may have thread jammed in a mechanism and it needs a technician's tools to get at it properly.

The thread keeps jamming under the feed dogs. The machine takes about 2 stiches and then it won't move any more, but it keeps sewing making a terrible mess under plate. What can I do to fix this...

I had the same problem and tried everything you did: rewinding the bobbin, checking to be sure I had the bobbin in correctly, checking the upper threading, readjusting the tension. When nothing I tried helped, I bit the bullet and took it to the shop where I had bought it. The timing was off; there were burrs on the bobbin case; the hook was not performing correctly;there were threads caught between the tension disks. It cost about $65 but when I brought it home, it purred like a kitten! I suggest you take it in for a check up! Especially if you've tried all the usual tests and none of them worked.
I'm sorry I couldn't give you a do-it-yourself answer but sometimes they've just gone beyond what we can do for them.

I have read and reread the instructions and have followed it to a t and I can't get the bobbin thread to come up to loop

Make sure you pull the bobbin thread out and hold the end while cycling the machine at the start. You need to have a goodly length or it will just not be pulled out.
