If your that far you should see two clips holding the motor in place one on top one on bottom
once you pop those off the motor willl fall away so top speak
the coupling is right there
the clips might be held on by a 1/4 inch srew

The spin cycle is making a terrible noise - the drum seems very loose and even makes a starnge sound when moving it by hand. Can I repair this myself?

If this is a Whirlpool manufactured TOP LOADER (such as Roper, Estate, Kenmore, Amana, and Frigidaire), you may have a damaged or broken motor coupling. Whirlpool manufactured top loading washers use a motor coupling between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission) in place of a drive belt. This configuration is known as "direct-drive". The coupling can break through normal wear and tear. Washing frequent loads of heavy items and reduce the life span of the coupler. Common symptoms include the following:

1. No spin or agitation.
2. Washer will fill and empty.
3. Drive motor still runs.
4. Strange rattling, grinding or clicking noise during agitation or spin cycles as the drum sits still.

If your washer is exhibiting these symptoms, then its probably a safe bet that the motor coupling is bad.

This problem is commonly caused by a broken motor coupling. Whirlpool manufactured top loaders (such as Kenmore, Roper, Estate, Fridgidaire and later model Maytags) all utilize a motor coupling instead of a drive belt. This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system. The motor coupling wears with age and can break over time. The usual symptoms are a washer that will fill and drain, but will not agitate or spin. A loud noise is also common as the the drive motor still spins, but the transmission will not be engaged. This is a very simple problem to fix and does not cost that much to repair. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

A replacement coupling can be purchased on line at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
appliancepartspros.com
pcappliancerepair.com
repairclinic.com

NOTE: The new couplers are reinforced with with a steel grommet to resist breakage better, but they still aren't break proof. Overloading the washer can contribute to premature wear on the coupler and reduce its life span. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for properly loading your washer.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Changing a belt on a washing machine

There is no belt on this machine.
It uses a direct drive coupling between the motor and transmission.
Ope the control console, then remove the cabinet clips to remove the cabinet for access to the motor.
Remove the motor then remove the broken drive coupling(3 parts).
Replace the part and re-assemble the washer.

Roper washer RAX4232PQO doesn't agitate or spin

It sounds like you may have a broken motor coupling. This is a common problem that usually occurs through normal wear and tear. Replacement couplers are more resilient and resist breaking much better. If the washer will fill, will not agitate or spin, but will still drain, these are the symptoms of a broken motor coupling. The accompanying noise of the motor engaging and a rattling/grinding sound is also a common symptom. This is a very simple and inexpensive repair. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The part number is included in the link I provided. You can purchase a replacement on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: Roper is manufactured by Whirlpool and uses Whirlpool parts, so these instructions will apply.

My Roper washer Model# RAX4232JQ0 won't agitate or spin. Is it shaft driven or with a belt. I've tried everything. Even checked the switch for the lid.

The washer uses a direct drive system. What this means is that it uses a motor coupling in place of the drive belt. It sounds like to me that you have a broken motor coupling.

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.

If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this has been helpful to you. NOTE: Roper is manufactured by Whirpool, so the instructions I provided will apply to your washer.

Your coupling between the gearcase and the motor has broken. Go to a appliance parts store and ask for a whirlpool washer coupling. Remove the cabinet by taking the 2 screws out just behind the control panel.

remove the whole cabinet.Everything clips together. Pump first, motor, and then coupling. BobH
