Question about Memorex MT1701 17 in. HD-Ready LCD Television

1 Answer

The picture is very fuzzy with a snow like effect. I have tried all the inputs and have the same problem. When I go to picture in picture the small square picture is perfectly clear. I purchased a Memorex 32 inch LCD HDTV. I have it connected to my directv box, but have not purchased a hdbox yet. The picture is slightly fuzzy with what looks like millions of little snowflakes ( pixels ). Is the problem with a connection, or that it is because I don't have the hdtv box yet or something entirely different......NEED Help before I take this back and go back to our ancient tube tv.

Well, I can tell you it shouldnt have anything to do with your not having an HD box. The TV does not require a HD signal to give you a quality picture. The HD box only gives you the enhanced HD signal, but should work as any regular TV without it. How do you have it connected?

P.S. Go ahead and send DirecTV out to hook up your high def. Its relatively inexpensive compared to your tv....(You may get the Hi-Def receiver for free with your upgrade, or may cost you 99 bucks, and you pay about 5 bucks more per month on the HD package) But they will come out and hook it all up for you to your TV and ensure that your picture quality is not only great, but the extra 70 or so HD channels are amazing in comparison. That will fix both your snowy connection (probably a cable) and maximize your TVs potential!

Amp transmitting fuzzy picture

It could be dirty contacts, corroded connectors inside, or dirty from atmospheric pollution or even dust.

Other degradation may result from a solder joint developing corrosion now, or a diode getting leaky.

It is repairable, but it is a time investment.

Has fuzzy spots all the way across the screen and just scrolls up

Is the picture fuzzy whether you are waching tv or a dvd or a tape. If it's only fuzzy on tv or dvd or tape then it's the source. If all inputs are fuzzy suspect a bad tv.

Fuzzy Picture

Fuzzy is a funny word. I never use it to describe a picture problem. That because fuzzy can go too many different ways. There is snowy fuzzy, blurry fuzzy, grainy fuzzy, and demodulated fuzzy. If the set goes out of focus intermittently that has something to do with the focus ciruitry. If it goes grainy that is a front end problem, usually tuner related. The other types of fuzzy are generally associated with problems in video processing some where. So, which is it?

Oh, and BTW that unit has three small picture tubes in it, one red, one blue, and one green. It doesn't have a 'bulb'.

Screen looks 'snowy'

Sounds like an electronics problem. Try resetting in the setup window. Remove and replace the battery. If these don't work, definitely take it back to the supplier for warrantee repair. Any problems with that, go straight to Consumer Affairs.

When you say you have tried all the inputs you are not clear if you mean tuner, vcr, dvd, aux, etc. If you are talking about only the cable input it sounds like you have a bad tuner. To obtain picture in picture there are 2 tuners in your set. This would explain why the small picture is ok while the main picture is bad. You should be able to swap the signals (see your ops manual). Try this. If the snow moves the one tuner is bad. If you have put other signals in (besides cable)such as dvd then the problem is in the matrix circuitry where the two signals merge. Either problem should be easy for a good tech to solve and not cost a whole lot.
