Unfortunately I have encountered this problem before, from what i understand it is a poor design by whirlpool. and once you take it off it can be very hard to get it to STAY on. there is actually little you can do to solve this. one option is to reshape the ring using various tools. although this can end up making it worse. also make sure any food particles are not inside the ring preventing it from being seated properly.hope this helps

You didn't say which model KitchenAid mixer you have. Assuming that it is a tilt-head, and that the metal portion of the motor housing joining it to the base did not break, the Service Manual can be had at:

When under a load (such as bread dough) my locking latch will not stay locked. How can I adjust the latch or repair the problem?

Well I afraid that you will not like the answer. The locking latch on a tilt head mixer can only be fixed replaced or repaired by taking the motor head apart. The bottom from the top.

1 remove mixer from stand
2 remove silver drip ring
3 remove rear end cap
4 remove locking pin in the planetary
5 remove planetary
6 remove nine screws in bottom of mixer
7 separate top from bottom of motor head
8 do not tear gasket or you will have to replace it (buy on line)
9 inspect locking latch and tighten or replace as needed
10 check gear grease and replace if all hard or all runny
11 reassemble

Sorry this is not an easy fix but it is do-able. You will need throw away rags a nice flat work space and some patience. I f you have never done a mechanical fix to anything it should take you about two hours, if however you are mechanically inclined and not afraid to tackle new projects should take you about forty-five minutes. let us know if we can help you.

On my Kitchenaid Artisan mixer the 3" silver rod fell out the back. How do I slide back in?

I an sorry but the only Rod in the back of a K45SS is the pivot hinge pin that holds the motor head onto the base. if it fell out then the answer is simple. Turn the mixer upside down and wiggle the base while sliding the pin back in. Once the pin is back in place, there is a set screw in the middle of the shaft that you can see while you are replacing the pin, turn this back down with a flat head screwdriver untill it is firmly against the hinge pin. The culprit of the problem is this set screw. It came loose and allowed your hinge pin to vibrate out and then fall down or fall out as you said. once the set screw is back in place you will be fine. To avoid this problem in the future you might remove the screw entirely and put a drop of "Lock-Tight" on it that will help hold the setscrew in place for a very long time.

KitchenAid mixer ring falls off

The trim ring news to be ta]ed in place with a plastic-face mallet. This type of mallet does not (if used properly) Mar the surface it striks.

Hold the trim ring in place while tapping it in place. It often takes patience to get it right.

The ring is properly in place when there is no place where you can insert a fingernail between it and the mixer body all around the ring.

Where the beaters fit in, there is a small oil leak when using. It will probably get worse. Bought in 1996

Oil leaks are common. As oil is stretched it separates. If it is leaking over your nice silver "beauty ring" then the ring is not catching the oil. If it is leaking below the silver "beauty ring" then the gears in the planatary area has worn down too much and is separating.

In either case, you can wipe it up with use or do what a lot of DIY people do, take her apart and remove and regrease the unit. Search online for regrease kitchenaid mixer, I would post a link but I dont want the link to be broken down the road. There are tons of tutorials for it online. You remove the grease and replace it with new. I used automotive grease from autozone, but there is a specified grease for the mixer on kitchen aid's site. Depends how picky you are.

Kitchenaid does not grease under the planatary from factory anymore, they just dont see a need. (this is an area below the silver beauty ring I mentioned. It was metal on metal when I took apart my new mixer for check up. This may be why you have grease leakage too, it was an old standard to grease there, but there is not significant friction to warrant the heavy grease there anymore.

Hope this helps.

Silver metal ring falls off how do i get it to stay on

Hi JNJ2SOME. I believe the silver metal ring you are referring to is your mixers “Planetary Drip Ring”. Is it about 5” in diameter? The drip ring is a friction fitted piece that should stay on during normal use. It should be on tightly enough that to remove it by gently tapping the edge of the ring with a straight screwdriver at several places around the ring.
If the drip ring is falling on it’s own, than you might try the reverse on trying to remove the ring and tap the bottom of the drip ring gently with a few taps of a hammer (use a piece of wood between the hammer face and the ring to protect the ring) around the ring to see it that seats it any better. If it still comes off, then the ring opening has been expanded to the point that it won’t ‘grip’ the mixer head where it’s attached. You can either attempt to ‘crimp’ it with a pair of pliers at a few points around the ring so that it may grip better, or you may want to order a replacement drip ring for your mixer.
The inspection and troubleshooting of the inside of your mixer is a DITY capability, particularly if your mixer is out of warranty, which it is. Just be sure to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website:
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM90P, and select one of the files listed under Parts List (check to see it this matches your mixer model).
Turn to pages 4 & 5, titled “Case, Gearing and Planetary Unit”, which provides and exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. Locate Illus. Nos. 26, Planetary Drip Ring, which is the part you want to order.
Here are five potential vendors in no particular order:;;;; and Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
Also, while your mixer is apart it would be ideal to check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc. It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your KA mixer yourself.
Here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble, repair, and reassemble your mixer.
Finally, if you feel this is beyond your capabilities and will be too difficult to do by yourself you can take your mixer to a local small appliance repair shop and have them troubleshoot and fix your mixer. KA Customer Care can provide you with the name and phone # of the closest authorized KA repair shop in your area or you can do a Online web search, but be sure to get at least three estimates before deciding to commit to one repair shop.
Good luck. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

How do I get access to the switch on a KitchenAid Classic mixer? I've removed all the needed screws,I think, and nothing comes apart except the silver band and the back plate....

the chrome ring around the rotating head needs tapped off to and drive the pin out of the center shaft of the head. Pry it off to access 5 ring gear screws under the head. The also hold the two halfs of the case together along with the 4 obvious ones.

Silver ring off and can get it back on

It holds on by friction alone. There is no screw or anything. It should just push on maybe with a few light taps around the ring with a hammer.
