1. its mainly due to Sim card get older and bend. So it cannot seat well in its slot.
2. Remove the Sim card. Check whether Sim card is normal. Due to the dust on the Sim also can cause this problem
3. May be the phone's Sim slot pin allignment problem. Check whether the all pins are good.
4. Some times when phone falls to the ground makes the Sim move from its slot. So also this problem occurs.
5. if problem persists even after these diagnosis methods.
6.Contact service centre for further Rectifcation. thank you

For some reason my Nokia N72 shows that it is offline and when i try to set it to general or anyother mode it says insert sim card even though i got my sim card inserted....my sim card works perfectly on...

I think the best possible thing you must do is to get the software installed. It is too long a time to keep this fault on and cassue so much strain as it is possible to identify if the software corrrects the issue or else you have a fault in the harware section which must be estimated . possible chance of the SIM interface or the network IC being faulty.
Hope you try this out.

Insert sim problem 1100,1600

sometimes it is as simple as cleaning the sim card and sim points on the phone with a pencil eraser. sometimes it is related to a simcard IC (usually placed close to the sim tray in the phone) so if u do not succeed cleaning the sim and sim points of the phone u need to change the simcard IC
