Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

Our washing machine (model GLTR1670AS0) is not pumping the water out. After taking off the front lower panel, the pump is making a loud obnoxious sound. I'm assuming the pump is bad. Should I take the pump off and try and clean it? Should I just get a new pump?

Use a flashlight and look into the suction port on the pump and see if there is anything clogging it. Check the pump impeller and make sure that no blades are broken or missing and that the impeller will spin freely. If any blades are missing/damaged or if you can't get the impeller to spin freely, the pump is defective. Sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.

If it were me, I'd replace it. I will however offer you a phone # to Belks Used Appliances. Speak to Harry. Give him the make and model #, more than likely he will have a used one in good condition that he can ship, he can also price a new one for comparison. Hope this helps.

Tip

Unclog your washing machine pump.

This is a tip for those who own a Frigidaire ATF8000 washing machine model which does not drain properly and/or makes a loud noise while draining.
For me, it was something caught at the end of the hose trying to get into the pump. This made a terrible loud noise when the washer was in spin cycle, working the pump to try to drain the water.

First of all, unplug the power cord.
Since the new Frigidaire ATF8000 models have no easy access panel to remove in the front, you have to unscrew the back panel to begin.
I found that I could not do anything except unplug the two wires clipped to the pump from the back of the machine, since the Askoll M85 pump is located near the front.

So I carefully laid the washing machine on one of it's sides so that I could get to the pump from the opening on the bottom of the washer.
This was easiest since now I have two ways of seeing the pump. But it still would be better if Frigidaire didn't block access from the front.
So now you should be able to move the green metal clip holding the big black hose that comes down from the drum attached to the pump. There will be water spilling out as you remove the hose. I put some dish towels underneath to catch anything.
In my case, as soon as I unattached the black hose, I found a piece of metal bra wire halfway into the pump. I removed this, re-attached the hose, raised the washer back upright, re-attached the two wires clipped to the pump, screwed on the back panel and plugged the washer back in.
And now the machine works beautifully once again.

Hope this helps.

Loud and Grinding during spin cycle

More often than not, something get sucked down into the pump. The pump is located in the lower left of the unit (typically) and can be accessed by removing the front panel. You may need to lift the top section to release the front panel. An example - I recently repaired a washer that had a bobby pin lodged in the fins of the pump and prevented it from spinning so that it couldn't drain. I removed the pin and re-assembled the machine and it has worked perfectly.
Hope this helps! Rate my solution!

How do i access the water pump on the frigidaire affinity atf6000

There should be to screws at the bottom on each end of the lower front panel. Remove them and the panel will fall down off its upper locating pins and you can then remove the panel. The water pump should be right at the front on the lower right corner. Make sure you unplug the machine first if you are going to be working in there.

Take the lower panel of the washer front. The pump is right behind the panel either in the center or to the right side. (Depends on model)

Will not agitate or spin, makes loud noise during those cycles

Sounds like coupling gears between transmission and motor... they did away with the belt and went direct drive with coupling gears. It can pump water out but nothing else. water pump is mounted to front of motor is why it will pump water out.
