Question about Philips DSR704

Philips DSR704 stuck at "Powering up unit"

Philips DSR704 on DirectTV. TV Screen is stuck on "Welcome. Powering up...".

The unit was fine last night, except I noticed that the green light was on, even though I had earlier told the unit to go on standby. Usually that turns off the green light until I take it off standby with the TIVO button.

I think the problem might possibly be related to the fact that the hard drive is full or maybe almost full. Something along these lines (I can't remember the exact details) happened before, but I was able to get in, and deleted some programs, then it was okay again.

But this time it's worse, because I can't get past this very first screen, as described at the beginning of this message.

Thanks for anything you might suggest!

Philips DSR704 on DirectTV. TV Screen is stuck on "Welcome. Powering up...".

    fwadley's answer:
"you can take the hard drive out and hook it up to your computer as a slave. a fix it, take out and reinstall."

    Interesting idea. A few questions:

Is it difficult to open my dsr704? Is it some standard hard drive model? If I have to reformat it, will that cause problems with getting the dsr704 working again?

If I can't fix the drive on a PC, can I just buy another identical drive and install that?

I'm asking all these questions because I would very much prefer not to have to open the unit up. Of course if the unit has become a doorstop (or boat anchor, whatever you like to call that totally dead condition), then I will open it up, because at that point there is nothing to lose.

Do we know for sure that this "powering up" stall is a hard drive issue?

    Thank you.

It sat on "starting up" overnight and then again for about an hour after being unplugged and replugged.

Right now I have it unplugged and I am going to wait a longer time before plugging it in.

Somewhere I read that it could help to remove the RF cables, so I'm going to do that too.

I will post back when I see what happens with this round.

When this happens, your hard drive is probably going. Are you familiar with computer tech? Can you remove and put in a hard drive? You can try to "fix" the drive, but you might be better off buying a new drive and formatting it to work in the Tivo. You have to go to the company Weaknees and get a program called "InstantCake" that will take a hard drive and turn it into a DirecTivo drive. If you've ever added a new hard drive to a computer it's very similar. Warning; if you do this, spend the extra bucks and get an "AV" drive that is built for the hard use a Tivo drive gets. You might also want to get a SATA drive (which are huge!) and a SATA-to-IDE converter board for the back of the drive. I've done this, and the drive has lasted a long time.

I dont know if it will work or not. I would let it set for awhile on welcome to see if anything happens. I would belive the hard drive is the same as the computers. I would not format it, if you do open it up and hook it up, try to scan disk it and defrag it, can you defrag it as it is.

Philips dsr704 that has a tuner that is failing

About the only solution that I know of is to send it to a company called Weaknees. It's expensive but they do good work. The prices for various repairs are on their web site. If you don't have any other problems order the specific tuner replacement. If you have other problems, you might want to go for their "general fix" solution.

"Welcome. Powering-up " on screen and cannot turn it off manually or remotely

If you have a TiVo that is stuck on powering up, you likely have a bad hard drive. See this page for more information about a TiVo that is stuck on powering up.

I just downloaded the manual for the DSR704 (except fo the inside of the front cover which I now need).

I went to It gave a list of the manufacturers of their recorders. Choose Phillips and then select the DSR704. It was very easy once knew where to go. Good luck.

Stuck at "Welcome Powering UP"

It's most likely the drive. You can buy preconfigured kits or buy the software and hard drive and do it yourself.

You can send it out to CCS in Indiana and they'll test/repair what is necessary (if they can). Some of these units are very old and they aren't repairable, but they do their best and are very quick on turn around times.
