I cannot find our original disc - language is set to English - do not want to delete preferences since I don't have disc ...we have another machine networked to this computer with the original information...can I not simply bring that information from that computer to this rather than risk having to buy another program

This often happens when keyboard , or other regional settings are set to a language different from the one on QX installation (eg. US Engl. vs UK eng. keyb.) Go to Control Panel> Regional Settings, and check if the
language selected in Regional Settings tabs is the same as the language of installed QuarkXPress version.

If that does not work, delete Quark Express preference folder located in Users/Library/Preferences/Quark/QuarkXPress . After deleting preferences restart QuarkXpress. All saved preferences will be lost, original files in preferences will be rebuilt at factory default settings next time you start Quarkxpress.
If still no luck, then you may need to uninstall and reinstall again QuarkXpress. Usually changing regional settings or deleting Preferences folder does fix this problem.
Check keyboard and regional settings first.

Hi,
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

I am using QuarkXpress 6.5 which was working fine until yesterday. But since today morning, I am not able to open it, neither does my .qxd/.qxp document open. Please help asap. I am on a deadline.

It could be that your quark preferences have corrupted, I would go to your users folder then go into the library folder, then the preferences folder and then the quark folder within the quark folder there should be a file called "XPress Preferences.prf" move this to the trash (But do not delete it yet). When you open quark next it will recreate the preference file and hopefully that will sort it out. If this has corrected the problem you can then deleted the file in the trash. Please note that you will have to reset your preferences once you open Quark again.

Hope this helps.

Quark keeps quitting

I take it you mean it quits on startup, if so this is what I would suggest.

What you could do is go to users folder then open up the folder of whoever is the active user (generally this user folder icon is a house icon) then open the library folder then the preferences folder and then quark folder then QuarkXPress 6.0 folder.

In this folder there is a file called "XPress Preferences.prf" move it to the trash (Do not empty the trash if it does not work you can replace the file back into the preference folder) and then start up Quark, it should rebuild the file.

Please note your preferences will be back to default and you will need to reset them.

I would also suggest that you go to www.quark.com then support and update your version of quark to the most up to date version from 6.0 possibly up to 6.1 or 6.52.

Hope this helps.

After using my quarkxpress 7.1 everyday for 5 years, this morning it won't launch. I just get the logo screen with whirling color disk. Can you help me resolve this?

It sounds like your preferences file has corrupted.

This solution is for Quark on a Mac. What you could do is go to users then which ever user is the active one then library then preferences then quark then QuarkXPress 7.0 in this folder is a file called "XPress Preferences.prf" move it to the trash and then start up Quark, it should rebuild the file. (Do not empty the trash if it does not work you can replace the file back into the preference folder)

Please note your preferences will be back to default and you will need to reset them.

Hope this helps.

I have a msg error code Quarkxpress 7

Sorry I only just saw your posst so this may be far too late, but at least for future reference: -36 is one of the oldest and most ubiquitous errors in the Mac world.

It's name is "ioErr" and the rather obtuse explanation for it is "I/O error (bummers)" ie, there was some kind of input/output error.

This should mean that XPress is trying to work with a corrupt file.

The most likely suspects, in rough order, are a text or picture file that XPress just tried to import; an auxiliary file such as a font, profile or XPress Xtension; a text or picture file already imported; the XPress document you are working with; your XPress Preferences file; XPress itself.

Working with XPress since version 2 on Apple system 6 I have never seen any guaranteed cure for a -36 error but there are three basic remedies, none of which is by any means certain.

Any corrupt file just might be revived by Copying it to another location.

If the file seems to be an XPress document and can be Opened at all, there is a better chance of reviving it by first making a new, blank XPress document containing nothing more than the one obligatory blank pagewith the same page size as the suspect had. Saving, Closing and re-Opening the blank document alongside the suspect, setting both documents to Thumbnails view then manually Dragging each page from the suspect into the blank will essentially cause XPress to look at what it's doing, rather than assuming that all the components are workable. Fairly obviously, it may be safer to Drag one page at a time Saving, Closing and re-Opening the "rescue" file between Drags.

Again if the file seems to be an XPress document and can be Opened at all, there is a better chance of reviving it by working with a Copy, deleting either half of its contents - whether whole pages or items on a single page - Saving the remainder, Closing re-Opening, testing and perhaps again deleting half the contents…

Good luck
