i have the same camera but i want to use it like a webcam. I found a driver that is located in the canon homepage, called "canon RAW codec"(compatible with Vista and XP), and it allows you to download the photos of the camera and to take fotos instantly, but it don't suport the webcam function... :( . I'm using it in windows XP.
That's all, Ithink that it must work for all the users.
It is possible your USB connector has been damaged on the camera. This should be a relatively cheap fix however sometimes the circuit could also be damaged by a spike of power comming from the computer side. If it is found to be the later, you could be up for more than a new camera is worth. I would recommend purchasing a USB Compact Flash card reader to access your images off the card directly. They are relatively cheap to purchase from a computer store and easy to setup. Good luck.
I also have a Sony Cybershot but its a W110. The battery indeed will die out when you don't use it. I usually take mine out of the camera and the life extends a fair bit. But sometimes the date and time will have been lost.
About your functions problem, there is most likely a damaged pin inside the spindle or a damaged circuit board which you cant really do much about. You can however take it to the reseller and claim on warranty if its still in the time of 1 year or 3 years extended. If its still within warranty and the reseller rejects it, ring SONY up and ask them.
It appears that you need to re-install the software and drivers for your PC system. Here is a link to vivitar, if needed. http://vivitar.com/en-us/Support.aspx
