Re: router

Try the following

Click Start then All Programs then Accessories then Command Prompt A new window will open

I suggest trying this wired (turn off wired adapter and then wireless

If this command times out 4 times you are not connected to the router.

If it does not time out you are connected to the router.

Then when the ping works -- if you cannot connect to the internet you may be missing DNS Addresses

From the same Window enter -- (1 space before /)

ipconfig /all

You should see in the lines of data that follow the ip address like 192.168.1.?, the subnet mask, the default gateway (router address) and if there are no DNS addresses you either need to configure them into the router (generally preferred) or configure them onto the adapter -- network connection -- Internet Prorocol (TCP/IP).

If that does not fix the internet you probably have probably failed to meet the internet service providers requirements for the WAN/Modem side of the router. These can often be found on the ISP support or help site. IF your ISP is a Telco -- you MAY need to configure PPPoE (and "bridge" their modem/router), cable based ISP's less often have requirements for the WAN side of a router.

PS with wireless communications you should consider encryption. This is a protection from others accessing your network and any files that mau be in shared folders.

Re: router

Do you have your wireless on in the computer. I need more info, you should be able to go into your network setting and enable your wireless there, or in the control panel also under wireless networks, Try that and if it don't work give some more info plz. Thanks

Re: router

If this is a new installation/set-up, you need to run the Installer CD that came with the router.

If your are adding to an existing network that is already running/working:
1. try running the new/additional PC using lan cable instead of WiFi initially for the configuration;
2. Verify that the new PC do get an IP add from the DHCP server (which is also the router); or
3. Static assign IP add to the new/additional PC based on what your network is using. Example on the new/additional PC: IP Add; Subnet Mask; Default Gateway; DNS whatever your ISP/Router is using;
4. Verify what WEP/WPA security/key your network is using and that is also configured in the new/additional PC.

Hope that this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

good luck and kind regards.

Hi, you can hook the router to your computer using a standard Ethernet cable (the one with connectors that look similar to phone jack connectors, but a little wider). You should have an Ethernet port on the back of your computer, and you can connect the cable from there to the Ethernet LAN port on the router.

There's no place on modem to hook router

Look for Ethernet jacks. You want to hook both your computer and your daughter's laptop to the router to out ports i.e. usually on the front side. The back side of router would hook using probably another Ethernet jack to your modem.

Hook up router and can't access internet from wired computer.

Sometimes the modem-computer-router not "sync" together.
Try this.
1-hook the computer to modem. Internet yes? good.
2-hook the computer to router and check you IP. If it like,
the router's DHCP is working.
3-reset router to default setting.
turn off all and turn on modem, router, computer.
keep me posted.

Router not hooked up properly

Router setup
If you are using the cd that comes with the router, that is the problem. You do not have to use the cd. Go to the control panel and un-install the program that the cd installed.
Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Have an Acer Aspire PC computer - trying to hook up a Lynksys nr041 router so can hook up another HP Notebook computer...not for sure how to do this and be able to use internet on both computers. Thanks...

Ok if you have DSL this router will NOT connect via PPPoE so no user name or passwords for dsl. But if you have a cable modem just plug the network cord from your cable modem into the WAN port on router... then plug the computers into the 1-4 ports on the router.. you might need to reset your Cable/Dsl modem after everythings hooked up.
