I had a similar problem after a few years of relatively light use. The problem was with one of the main gears in the gear box. The counter bore in it's guide bushing wore out and elongated allowing the gear to slip. I pulled apart the assembly, removed and re-installed the bushing rotating it 180 degrees. It was working fine for a whlie but the same problem is showing up again.

Spray this on the cutters and sides of the cutters to lube the cutters and bearings....this will stop the noise...and prolong the life of the machine...
May have paper bits jammed above fixed curved metal surface that spiral cutter slices against. Need to spend time removing built up material with stiff wire or flat tool.
