If your headphones aren't working, make sure you don't have an audio process disabled. For example on my Toshiba, the audio program the Toshiba came with was Realtek HD Audio Manager, if the program is closed or has an error. Your computer will not recognize your headphones. Try looking through your files for a "audio manager" by searching. The way to search is: Open START then it should say at the bottom a search toolbar. Type in "Audio Manager"
Hope this helps. Good Luck!

I've just brought on too, I thought the same thing, have to use headphones or hook it up to a speaker otherwise I strain to hear anything. Was also disappointed to find no Media Controller software pre-installed. Overall love this portable computer.

Headphone Jack is NOT working properly

Check your sound device levels. you may need to enable that headphone port before it is usable. you can do this in the control panel tab. reinstalling your sound drivers wouldn't hurt also.

Toshiba A10 headphone jack problem

I think you are on the right track, if the headphone jack is worn and shorting out itll kill the speakers because it thinks headphones are plgged in, ebay would be a good start for parts, maybe even call toshiba and speak to their tech support.

Why our head phones on Computer are not working

Is there a switch to turn on the headphone port? Is there a control on the headphones to adjust the volume (on a volume level on the side of the laptop)? Also, when the headphones are plugged into the laptop, go into your sound settings and turn up the master volume (and wave volume if it is low.. If that works, make sure to turn it back down when disconnecting the headphones).

Also, do the headphones work in another device (stereo, etc..)?
